I think you can make it manual on the controller select screen. Back on PS2, I think you had to hit L1 or R1, depending on how little/much assistance you wanted. Not sure if it's the same now. And I would still advise you to control whoever you feel is best, just don't over-commit.

Well, everyone will form their own opinions on the playlist - I think it's awful too, but at least the option is there to change it.
