I remembered one downside... For members posting multiple pictures, (like mufcsean) to stop the post being ridiculously long and untidy, he sometimes does it over two posts. That wouldn't be possible with merging in place. It isn't a huge deal, granted, but still an annoyance to some.

If you're talking about merging two option files and using them together, the answer is no, you can't. Sorry.
