I was having problems with this too. You press right on your d-pad to flick between tactics. You need to adjust your setup so that you can control your players with just the left analogue stick and not both the analogue stick and d-pad. Check out this youtube which will explain it a bit better...

Turn off the pass assitance then. And for that matter any other assitance from the CPU. Then you will have complete control like me.

It's weird how some people have a problem with shooting and some don't. I myself am perfectly happy with the shooting, it's fine for me.

I started ML with the PES default squad. There are a couple of decent players in the youth squad. Palmieri and Shimzu (I think) are two signings you want, and I think there's a keeper in there that has slightly better stats than your starting No.1.
