I think your problem could be due to the fact that you're using R1 to receive the ball. Press R2 instead. Believe me it will be much better.

It depends. Sometimes we have ourselves to blame if our players are too aggressive. If the ref gives you a quiet word, take it as a warning. I have taken note that after one warning ,the ref will have no hesitation in flashing a yellow card for another offence by the same player.
