Advanced Defensive Help Needed

Hi all,
I've been playing Pro Evo 2008 on the PS3 for a few months now: I've been pretty good at all of the Pro Evo's so far... but lately I've come across a huge problem.

A few days ago, out of nowhere, I've become extremely, EXTREMELY bad at defending. Players, even CPU can ghost past me with ease... almost as if they're not there. I've been conceding 6+ goals a match... this is absolutely soul-destroying, as I used to be good at defending: I'm not sure if I've 'forgotten' how to defend, but it sure feels like it!

I can easily get close to players... I use R1 to run with the player until I catch up with them, then hold X to pressure tackle them (now never seems to work) and/or I'll use the Square button to bring in support from another team mate (when I do this nowadays, the opposition player simply shrugs them off and goes on a clear run). I've used R2 to 'hold' the player off, but in this case, the pace is slowed down so much that the opposing player simply sprints past my defender/defensive midfielder. Also, I've highlighted players to 'intercept' the run, but the problem simply seems to be, I can't disposses the player when I get close to them.

I had the PS2 version of Pro Evo 2008, and it used to be the use of X and Square used to be enough. It doesn't seem enough now!
Attacking I've got no problem. I can still score goals... but when you're letting in 6+ goals, it doesn't really matter!

So... basically, what I'm after is how to disposses players when you're close to them... actually, ANY defence tips will help! Let's make this the ultimate guide to defending! I'm off to go reflect on my crapness at defending: hope you can help!

6+ a game? Even on Top Player, that's kinda crazy against all the but the best teams (Classic All-Stars and the like)! 8^|

If you're playing ML, how's your Body Balance? If your defenders have poor BB, while the other teams' players have developed better BB over a season or two, they'll leave you for dead every time. I friggin' hate playing against guys like Owen, Essien, etc, because of this. It's ridiculously cheap sometimes.

Maybe try setting your line to "C", so you'll have more time to get into position for an opponent's attacks, and make sure your defense arrows are set appropriately. Try altering your formation to channel attacks into certain areas, so you can deal with them more easily and effectively control play. Make sure to set the offside trap to a strategy button, and work the hell out of it.

The problem really is that my brother (who I play against the most) has suddenly made it so that all the tackling strategies I used to use (the ones I mentioned at the start of the post), simply do not work... I think I need someone to mention how to simply disposses a player when you're one on one or even two on one...

I appreciate the tip on offsides dude, I'll add it to one of my strategy buttons.

Sounds like your bro has figured your playing style out, so trying mixing things up on him. Or maybe he went into Edit and turned all of your team's stats to crap. :^|

Patience and positioning are really the only things that work. If your players are strong enough, going shoulder to shoulder and shirt pulling should work. If not, you've just got to keep yourself in good positions. I dunno what to tell you beyond that, there aren't any really special tricks.

lol! editing my stats?? i don't think he'd stoop that low... or would he??

i tend to use chelsea, so power shouldn't really be an issue. but lately, even essien and ballack get shrugged off by attackers all too easily: in an instance... how do u shirt pull... when would you use X? is it all the time or not. what about the use of R2...

thanks in advance... i think it'd be good to get this whole defence aspect of the game sorted on the forum, it hasn't been done so far!

It's mainly timing, just practice I say. Also I tend to use slide tackles a fair bit, I give away a lot of silly fouls, but if you're clever with your subs you can avoid red cards quite easily. That way, you're all but guaranteed to at least stop their progress.

hmm... cheers Captain, i can see where you're coming from with the slide tackles bit. what about the usage of X... when's the time to use it. some people say keep it held down (which is fine in PES2008 on PS2) but on PS3, it's a definite no go!

playing pro evo 2008 as if i'm speaking... i can easily keep up with players, but the i'm having great trouble dispossessing them, even when i've got a 'stronger' player... any thing on that?

A little trick which I found out was that my mate secretly changed my form arrows to 'all down' on my players and 'excellent. on his. he still never managed to beat my 6 goals, don't think any1 ever has (lol).

On the other hand he could just be better than you!!!

try playing with a narrow back 4 ,with 1 or 2 DM midfeilders ,that way he will find it tough with through balls and if he goes to the wings ,your full backs can go to the ball ,and automatically the DM fills the vacant hole

X button when your chasing and its 50-50 hold it down this holds his shorts.shirt ,when hes running at you ,get your defender straight ,and then tap x ,without the R1 ,this makes the defender better time the tackle increasing the chance of dissposesing him ,the same also applys for sliding tackle ,also the less you use team pressure (square) the more your players hold their posistions making it difficult to pass through
