Ashley's Promise
On May 24th, 2009, Newcastle United were sent into dire straits. A 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa on a sunny afternoon at Villa Park saw The Magpies relegated to the Football League Championship.
Afterwards, club owner Mike Ashley initially put the club up for sale, citing that he had made many bad decisions during his time at the club, and set a price tag of £100m.
With the end of June approaching, no satisfactory bids had been made and fans were left wondering what the state of their club would be come the start of the new season. Within the next two weeks, they were given peace of mind, but the majority were left outraged, as Mike Ashley publicly announced that he would be taking the club off sale and vowed to put right the wrongs of last season. He said:
"I will do all I can as an owner and more importantly, a Newcastle United fan to get this club back into the England League where they belong. I admit that many of the problems of last season were my own doing and I sincerely apologise for that. I now have the challenge of finding the right manager to take things forward. It isn't something that I want to rush into, but with the transfer window opening shortly, I hope to have somebody in soon."
When asked about the possibility of temporary manager Alan Shearer taking over the club in a permanent role, Ashley remained relatively quiet on the idea, stating that it was "one of many possibilities."
Three weeks passed and whilst numerous names were being thrown around St James' Park, the fans clearly wanted only one man. Club legend Alan Shearer. Many were still furious that Mike Ashley would remain in control of the club, but others were grateful for his apology and visible desire to drive the club onwards. Whenever media outlets were able to get word from Shearer himself, he always played down the idea, saying that taking over the job on a permanent basis would be "unlikely".
But on July 20th, 2009, news crews from BBC, ESPN and Sky Sports rushed to St James' Park, as word spread that Alan Shearer had arrived at the ground for talks with owner Mike Ashley. Four hours later, a smiling Shearer left the stadium without answering any questions. This caused many fans to wonder whether or not they would be getting their man. Within fourty-five minutes of this happening, a Newcastle United club statement read:
"An announcement regarding the management situation will be made tomorrow afternoon in the form of a press conference held at St James' Park."
This was it. The fans had got their man. Alan Shearer was confirmed as the permanent manager of Newcastle United the following day. The press conference ended with Shearer and Ashley shaking hands, a sight many thought they wouldn't see again.
Shearer, the man who failed to keep Newcastle in the England League, re-took control of the club with immediate effect under a two-year contract. By this time, the squad had undergone some changes, with Damien Duff being a notable absentee.
The Squad
Goalkeepers
1. Steve Harper
26. Tim Krul
With Shay Given leaving for Manchester City last season, Steve Harper has finally been able to solidify himself as the Newcastle number one. It would be Krul to give that spot to anyone else.

Defenders
2. Fabricio Colloccini
3. Jose Enrique
12. Danny Simpson
13. Zurab Khizanishvili
16. Ryan Taylor
27. Steven Taylor
28. Tamas Kadar
35. Ben Tozer
Habib Beye and Sebastien Bassong both left the club and chose to remain in the England League during the close season, playing for Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, but most importantly Steven Taylor pledged his future to the club. They are relatively light on cover though, so Shearer may look into bringing in defensive reinforcements.
Midfielders
4. Kevin Nolan
7. Joey Barton
8. Danny Guthrie
11. Peter Lovenkrands
17. Alan Smith
18. Jonas Gutierrez
20. Geremi
22. Nicky Butt
25. Kazenga LuaLua
32. Wesley Ngo Baheng
47. Bradden Inman
The midfield is easily the strongest area of the squad and will be a vital part of the promotion push this coming season. It is arguably the strongest midfield in the division. Whether or not Joey Barton remains a Newcastle player by the time things get under-way is another matter.
Strikers
9. Marlon Harewood
23. Shola Ameobi
24. Andy Carroll
30. Nile Ranger
31. Frank Wiafe Danguah
42. Ryan Donaldson
46. Haris Vuckic
The loan signing of Marlon Harewood from Aston Villa will go some way towards making Newcastle a strong force going forward. Getting into the starting line-up won't be straightforward though, with Shola Ameobi and Andy Carroll waiting in the wings.
OOC - The plan is to continue this for as long as possible. As long as MM don't self-destruct or in some way make the game unplayable for me, I should be fine to post regular updates. I'm playing the PS3 version with 6 minute halves on Legendary difficulty, with semi-assisted passing, shooting and crossing controls. I won't spend much time on the friendlies, but in the next post I make I'll write up a pre-season report, noting any changes to the squad. Wish me luck!
