I've never worked out why an X, triangle, square or circle joypad button sometimes appears beside a players name when in a match.

Any ideas? I don't see it mentioned in the manual.

you have set manual 'attitude' mode, like 'counter attack' 'side attack' 'middle attack'
you can assign these to the L2+X, etc combo's :)
