Can't practise penalties??

I'm having trouvle taking penalties. Are you meant to hold the analog stick in position then shoot, or should you select and shoot at the same time? I have been holding the stick in place and I either tend to not hold it far enough (so the shot goes down the middle), or I over-compensate and shoot wide. Also, I can't find a 'penalties' option in the training menu anywhere (I can practise corners and free kicks). Any help appreciated.

no problem, i recommend you play PK match for practice instead of practicing in Training Mode. because in training you are going against the backup keeper of the team you selected. but in PK match mode, you can go against other keepers of other team. well this is just a recommendation. :)

a suggestion for you cawthor...when picking a direction, just hold in the direction in for a little bit, don't hold in the whole time, but dont just press and release

heres a tip related to blocking PKs, not sure if it work but it works for me.

whenever the opponent is about to shoot but seems to take quite a time to shoot. hes gonna shoot straight, 99.9%. unless the opponent is a human player than thats different.

Cawthor, you may want to try these steps.

1) Push D-Pad to Lower Right or Lower Left and hold it there (basically you are deciding whether to Shoot Low to the Left or Right of the Goal).

2) At Difficulty Star-Level 3 and below, tap the X button once. Wait a couple of seconds (eg. 3 secs) and tap the X button again.

3) Make sure all this while that your D-Pad does not shift to any other position.

4) The Penalty Taker will then proceed to shoot the ball low in the direction that you held.

5) At Difficulty Star-Level 4 and above, do exactly as above, but instead of tapping the X button, hold it down for a longer period (eg. 2-3 secs), release X button, pause for 3-4 secs and press X button again for 2-3 secs. At the higher levels, if you just tap the button, the Goalkeeper tends to save the shot.

6) I was pretty frustrated with penalty-taking until I remembered a friend of mine who taught me how to take penalty-kicks in that Amiga classic “Kick Off 2”. I won’t try anything fancy like holding the D-Pad to the mid-Centre Left or Right or Diagonal Upper Left or Upper Right. Just keep it simple.

7) Also after you having tapped the X buttons twice, immediately re-position your finger to the Square button, in case the goalkeeper manages to parry the shot or if the shot hits the post. When that happens, just follow through and thump the ball pass him with the Square button.

Forget the Analog Stick, the D-Pad for penalties is much easier to use.

if your penalty taker is good enough, i reckon you should aim for the top corners...it is harder for the keeper to save it, even if the keeper dives to the correct direction.

if you aim in the in the left side of the goal and shoot with a right footed player theres a high chance they will miss unless they have a good weak footed player

Has anybody had any really funny penalties?

I had one where in a shootout my striker shit down the middle and it hit his keepers legs. The keeper got up and ran off screen cheering but the ball was still rolling and it crossed the line. The keeper ran back on the screen but the ball was already in the net.
