I'm currently on my fourth ML season and although I'm doing fairly well (quarter final of WEFA, final of the Cup, joint second in the league) my defence is utterly useless. My goal difference used to be exceptional, but now it's shit.

I have a couple of quality defenders (and some of the diddies from my starting team), and obviously need to sign some more, but can anyone give me some hints for defensive strategies, as right now the likes of VfB Stuttgart are ripping me to shreds at the back. I've tried fannying about with different formations, but I'm still getting horsed. It's sickening.

I have a top quality goalkeeper too, but he stands no chance these days. If I were him I'd be chatting with my agent.

Any help would be much appreciated.

well, what players do you have on defence?

i suggest a flat back formation with 4 defence

This is what i play with (notice i left the other players out i just put positions)

I love roberto carlos because he helps out quite a bit on offence if you put his attack setting up

Nesta and Cannavaro are powerful defenders, i love nesta, his great heading skills have given me a couple of goals as well.

a good right back is Arce.
As a substitute for a side back Zelewkow is a good choice.
if you are low on funds, Zewlekow and Arce are good backs.

I think defending is a lot harder on PES4 than PES3. The slide tackle works a lot better, especially with a quality player like Ferdinand. On the other hand the pressure / footin tackle (x button) just seems random as to whether or not you win the ball. It's really frustrating.

The only thing I can suggest is defend aggresively by pushing your defenders up and trying to win the ball first time before the attacking teams front man has the ball uner control. This is the way I play and it seems to help. If the front man gets on the ball and starts running at you then you have a problem in PES4. To do this by set your team strategy Back Line to A and get ready to make blocks and headed clearances

Also zonal press can help here but the problem is this effects all the team not just defenders and can pull players out of position in the midfileld

Try to not just hold down X, but instead run your dude around manually, and only press X when your near your target.

Oh and don't get carried away with holding down [] either, lest you run around in circles...

you should sign legrottagle from Juventus, he was absolutely exceptional first two seasons for me, but now hes always getting send off.

But he will be thirty on your game.

Hmm, i find defending easier and more realistic on PES4. I would suggest buying a very good holding midfielder such as Gilberto Silva (he always does a grat job for me) or Emerson. Also, try to sign Nesta and Campbell and make them your centre back partnership and if possible try and obtain pacey full backs. I would go into tactics but there's really no tactics involved when i am playing Just clear the ball out of danger, pass it about with quick movement and then score
