This is an extremely interesting read and provides evidence for the hidden stats too. Well worth checking out.

We all know that Raúl kisses his ring for his goal celebration.
But if you make a base copy of him, and the copy scores for the team he has been registered to, most likely Spain, he does not kiss the ring.
This suggests there are hidden stats for each player which are not transfered when making copies and includes their celebrations. Some may have noticed certain player move a certain way, eg Beckham, Roberto Carlos - this may be part of it too.
So if you have edited all your club players with replacements and replaced the international players with base copies, the copies will be quite inferior to the original players.
Seems the best way to transfer someone is to leave international players alone and edit a low quality player from the subs bench of that club to become the new player. This edited player will not be as good as the original but he will be slightly better than a base copy.
For those who didn't know, play a friendly match as Japan and in the formation screen, you will notice that you can see the extra stats for all the players by pressing L2 after choosing to substitute players.
The stats are mostly defensive:
GK Ability
GK Jump
PK Save
GK Throw Acc
GK Throw Pwr
GK Catch
GK Coach
Sliding Tackle
Intercept
DF Marking
Clear Acc
Interesting.
