GoldenEye: Rogue Agent

This is the new GoldenEye, it has its work cut out to beat its predecessor.

Rogue Agent finds players in the shoes of a dismissed 00 agent (the GoldenEye of the title) who works for classic Bond villain Goldfinger and becomes embroiled in a fight for control of the world's greatest criminal organisation. Or, as EA puts it, the FPS turns the usual 007 stuff on its head and "makes the player's goal to rule the world rather than save it".

After the stealth-centric action of the just-released Everything or Nothing, GoldenEye 2 is a return to the FPS action of previous Bond titles. Following the theme of the GoldenEye movie where Sean Bean played a corrupt MI6 agent, in GE2 you play a former 00 agent who is forced to quit for being just too darned nasty. You promptly decide to join famed Bond bad guy Auric Goldfinger in his bid to crush rival crimelord Dr No. Oh, and you are GoldenEye, apparently.

On the potentially thorny issue of the player not playing Bond, a spokesperson for EA commented: "Bond plays an important role early in the game, but this game isn't about James Bond; it's about the super villains and the clandestine underworld of the Bond universe. You won't miss playing as James Bond once you get to know-and unleash-your very own bad-guy."

EA's John Riccitiello commented "We've been working kind of in secret for over a year to try and build a product that meets the expectations consumers have," he said. "It's a violent story-driven shooter. This isn't the same debonair kind of Bond we've been building for the last couple of years."

Seems like various Bond characters will be cropping up, then, and sod the chronologically correct details; we've also heard that Oddjob and Jaws will be making an appearance. Frankly, we're hoping Knick Knack makes an appearance - "Boss, the plane!".

Looks nice, but if its anything like the previous couple of Bond games, then the gameplay will be uninspired and way too short.

That would be cool. But the current goldeneye graphics engine doesn't look too shabby.

A look ahead to the next James Bond based game "GoldenEye: Rogue Agent"...

GoldenEye Rogue Agent - Preview
17th May 2004

Building on the success of "Everything or Nothing"s Multiplayer mode on the PlayStation 2, "GoldenEye Rogue Agent" will feature as one of EA’s first games to be supported by Microsoft X-Box Live, allowing online multiplayer support for at least eight players and access to voice communication, tournaments and more.

Last year's E3 saw the official launch of EA’s return to the Bond universe in the form of “Everything or Nothing”.

With strong sales and a overall positive vibe, EA have taken a brave step in the Bond universe a put a twist on the latest game `GoldenEye 2` aka "GoldenEye : Rogue Agent", which will be available on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.

A first player single level demo of Fort Knox, Operation Grandslam was available ending with a battle against Odd Job, as well a multiplayer level featured in the climax of Moonraker the space shuttle launch facility, to attendees of E3 allowing a glimpse of what is to come with this Fall's release.

With the twist of playing a villain, the game enables players to use enemies as human shields and die in creative ways.

In the multiplayer level this was demonstrated through the use of a cargo train, which ran through a group of guards.

The influence of the 1997 game "GoldenEye 64" can be seen in the core of the game, through the use of independent dual weapon control. The team have created unique ways in which to dispatch foes in the simplest manner, such as stepping on the hand of someone who is hanging on to a ledge.

The single player levels are graded on player callous, which in turn enables you to increase your evil abilities.

The artificial intelligence, engine E.V.I.L (Emotion, Visceral, Intelligence, Learn), has been in development for over a year. The engine is designed to understand and interpret player styles allowing the AI to create more of a challenge.

The game allows the player to make intelligent use and fully interact with the gaming environment. Materials within the game provide varying levels of cover and distortion, solid objects that can be destroyed by weapons fire, frosted glass and heat blurs created by walls of fire.

The LA based team are aiming to incorporate four-way gameplay on to all three platforms, and online play on PS2 and X-Box.

I played this over at my mate's house and all I can say is that it look's very impressive. It has done well to live up to expectations as the Original was so good. I can't wait to get my own copy ;)
