This is the new GoldenEye, it has its work cut out to beat its predecessor.
Rogue Agent finds players in the shoes of a dismissed 00 agent (the GoldenEye of the title) who works for classic Bond villain Goldfinger and becomes embroiled in a fight for control of the world's greatest criminal organisation. Or, as EA puts it, the FPS turns the usual 007 stuff on its head and "makes the player's goal to rule the world rather than save it".
After the stealth-centric action of the just-released Everything or Nothing, GoldenEye 2 is a return to the FPS action of previous Bond titles. Following the theme of the GoldenEye movie where Sean Bean played a corrupt MI6 agent, in GE2 you play a former 00 agent who is forced to quit for being just too darned nasty. You promptly decide to join famed Bond bad guy Auric Goldfinger in his bid to crush rival crimelord Dr No. Oh, and you are GoldenEye, apparently.
On the potentially thorny issue of the player not playing Bond, a spokesperson for EA commented: "Bond plays an important role early in the game, but this game isn't about James Bond; it's about the super villains and the clandestine underworld of the Bond universe. You won't miss playing as James Bond once you get to know-and unleash-your very own bad-guy."
EA's John Riccitiello commented "We've been working kind of in secret for over a year to try and build a product that meets the expectations consumers have," he said. "It's a violent story-driven shooter. This isn't the same debonair kind of Bond we've been building for the last couple of years."
Seems like various Bond characters will be cropping up, then, and sod the chronologically correct details; we've also heard that Oddjob and Jaws will be making an appearance. Frankly, we're hoping Knick Knack makes an appearance - "Boss, the plane!".

The potential release date is October, but my guess is more like christmas.
Set to be released on PS2, Xbox and GameCube.
