graphics card settings AGPX

I was just looking on the advanced settings for my graphics card, and the AGP speed is on 1x, for a AGP8x card is this a good thing or bad?

sometimes motherboards have jumpers and settings on them or in their bios to dictate the speed of the slot.

i'd check your bios and motherboard manual to see if you can set the speed of the slot.

in practicalities sake, i dont think most computers can handle the bandwidth of anything over 4x yet.

Yeah, depends what your motherboard can do. Most wil do 4x.....some will do 8x. Do you know what make/model your motherboard is? try running it in 4x and see if you get any improvements. Also, have you tried a benchmarking program called 3dmark 2001? I would definately recommend that program to everyone, as it will give you an idea of what your graphics card and overall pc setup is capable of. It also displays your system info in depth.

in your case rchrd, go to:

http://www.futuremark.com/download/

scroll down and download this:

3DMark®2001 Second Edition (Build 330)

it's 39mb though, so i hope you got broadband

But when you run the program, click on 1. System Info 2.motherboard info 3. AGP capabilites. This will tell yuo all about what AGP setting you can use. The program itself is good for measuring game peformance and will run a series of tests...I think we should all do this, and submit our scores here.. then we can compare each others system performance.

thanks for the quick replies.

My motherboard supports up to 4x AGP but (im not completely certain of this) but the new 8x cards should be backwardly compatible as they run on the same voltage.

After restarting my computer it came up as 1x still. I dont know if this is a problem yet but I was wondering if would be effecting the performance of pro evolution.

p.s thanks for the link mate, but the file was 178 megs, running on a dial up here :)

ok what graphics card do you have? if its a radeon you can adjust the slider over to 4X....I dunno what Nvidia cards you though. and yes, 8X cards are backwards compatable.

Radeon 9600

Pro Evolution does run on my comp, got it on 800x600 low detail at the moment, im just looking to get as much juice out of it as possible :D

Without the patch its fine but about 100% too fast, with the first patch its a bit laggy but playable, and the second patch doesnt seem to have any effect.

Cheers, I just read your edited post, ill do that now. Thanks.

9600..is it the non pro version? well i got a 9700 non pro...and it runs the game beautifully, 1024X768 res high detail everything, even 2X anti aliasing and 4X Anisotropic. I dont even have ddr memory just pc133 and a pentium 4 2.2ghz cpu. But i tell you i can get alot of performance out of the game. I dont think a 9700 can be way ahead of a 9600 can it? play around and see what ya can do. Ahh have you got updated drivers too?

Yeah non pro version, Im running an AMD Athlon XP 1.3ghz, 512ddr , Radeon 9600 and Windows 98se (I have been reading a lot of problems between pro evo and 98).

Another question, what do you reckon about running different speeds and sizes of ram together?

I have a PC2700 512drr stick in at the mo, and have a PC2100 256ddr just sitting there because i wasnt sure if the speed differences would cause any problems.

I'll go give it a whack in the bios when I next restart. If Pro Evo wasnt such a quality game I would probably have given up, but i think its worth the hassle.

I wouldnt recommend running two different ram modules together. This would leave the frequency out of sync, so where the 2700 is running at 300mhz or whatever it is, and the 2100 running a lesser speed, it could cause problems and bottlenecks. yep..like biker jim says....you definately want to get out of 1X mode, cos it surelymust be preventing your system from running to its potential.

We seem to have a problem somewhere. In the bios I have set the AGP speed to 4x but when I run the advanced display settings and go to smartgart (or whatever its called) it still says its running at 1x. Even when I set it to 4x and restart it comes up as 1x when I go back into it.

So I have the bios saying 4x and the display settings saying 1x.

Edit

This seems to have been identified by ATi here but I cant really tell if they have any remedy for it as my motherboard definetly supports 4x AGP.

Ok, do you know what motherboard you have? maybe its possible it doesnt support 4X, or there could be a conflict somewhere..but i dont know much about AMD supporting motherboards...always better to go intel i say. Well, wish i had a few more answers for ya, but i just dont. Maybe flashing your motherboard bios may help.

Just to make sure I wasnt talking rubbish, I checked the manual (its a KT3 Ultra 2series mobo 'based on the via kt333 chipset' according to the manual)

Specifications, blah blah...here we go...

Slots,
One AGP slot
-supports AGP 2.0 1x/2x/4x.

Im starting to think there very well could be a conflict of something. Sorry for coming off as 100% more thick than I actually am but what is 'flashing your motherboard bios' when its at home.

Im not completely retarded, honest :)

could be a driver issue, or even a windows issue

as for your memory question

never...and i mean never, mix speeds...and i'll even go as far as to never mix ram stick sizes nowadays...as it only decreases performance.

in systems nowadays either get 512mb of high speed ram or a Gig of it.

8x Is A Faster Bus Speed So Communications Between The Motherboard A Gfx Card Is Faster So It Can Only Improve The Performance Of Your System If It Runs At 8x

Well so far 8X is a bit of a myth as to how well it performs as there has been no games which take advantage of its extra bandwith. I think games like doom 3 and half life 2 will probably start using that. But I do intend on getting an 8X motherboard with support for Dual channel DDR 400s.

rchrd, as for your question...a bios flash is a driver update for your motherboard. It is not always adivisable to do it though, if things are running well, but in your case, may help. Although you should always read the literature of your motherboard manufacturer. If you can find your mboard's website...then find your model on it...you will be able to find a bios flash utility. Once downloaded, you can run it through dos. I can usually hold down a key before windows loads up, which gets me into the bios flashing stage..ut its a different procedure depending on what motherboard you have. But a bios update can increase performance and compatability.

yep, thats true....as I said though......always read any relavent literature and find out as much as you can on it before doing anything. I suppose if your not familiar with this or unsure....best not to attempt it or leave it to someone who knows. I dont wanna be responsible for screwing up anyone's machine!!

Try checking the utilities disc that came with the mobo to see if there's an AGP driver on there.

My boarb supports AGP 8X, but it wouldn't do it until I installed a driver that was sitting on the CD.
