Gross Imbalance in Team Selection

One advantage that FIFA 08 has over PES 2008 is the range of top notch teams that two competitive players are likely to select.

When PES 2008 goes online at the weekend, I predict the Gaming rooms will look something like this

Barca V Barca
Barca V Inter
Inter V Barca
Brazil V Brazil
Newcastle V Barca (Guy got tricked into choosing weaker team)
Barca V Barca
Inter V Barca
Barca V Barca
Brazil V Argentina (there are always romantics out there who opt to buck the trend)
Barca V Inter
Barca V Barca

etc.....you get my drift.

This year, these teams stand so far beyond the rest that it is just bloody silly. I am particularly dissapointed with the way in which the International teams have been given their squads. i.e. If a particular player was injured, out of favour, or had fallen out with manager at a particular point in time, it means that Konami have not included them in the international roster. Such AWOL international stars as Del Piero, Van Nistlerooy, Nesta, Totti, Grosso, Nedved, means that there no viable international alternatives to play against Brazil other than a duplicate Brazil. (I dont care if some of the above have officially 'retired' from the international team (at least till Euro 2008 comes around).

Funny thing is, Brazil on the field as a team are not even all that great. Very beatable at Germany 2006 as France proved.

Very Frustrating

As for online, you should arrange games with some of us. We have a mini league going on PES 6 at the moment, which we probably wont finnish before PES 2008 lands so I'm sure we'll be starting up again. It's better to play guys from these post boards because we love the game, not just the winning... *waits for all the people who beat me to come and taunt.... (That's everybody by the way)*

And I totally agree, the same could be said about England, they don't play very well in real life but statistically and individually they are good, which means the team on PES is a lot better than it actually is, like what you said about Brazil. I don't think there's anything Konami can really do about that... I guess they could have a "team spirit" stat for the whole team... But then it'd be no fun at all as you would never select those teams.

They should also release updates like other games, but Seabass said there are no plans for that at this stage. :(

I guess you can see it as, you are the manager, so the team plays how you chose, not how the real life managers chose.

Yeah....that sounds good...I will keep my eyes peeled on this forum for any online comps that u arrange.

I have always believed that there are a shed load of stats and values that influence how players and their teams play that we dont get to see. Aside from the odious scripting or 'tilting of the pitch' which was so blatant in PES6, there are numerous invisible 'Team Ability Masks' which influence how a specific team will play regardless of the players they have on the park. i.e. Transfer Barca's entire squad to IFK Goteburg, and whilst that team will be transformed into an Uber team, the AI will not have them play the same way as original Barca.

Players are the same.

From scratch, you can create a stat for stat match for Ronaldinho in the edit mode. The two players will look identical in all ways to the gamer but the copy simply will not have the magic dazzle of the orginal as the original has the benefit of the invisible stats that we dont get to see (or edit). Only way to make another Ronaldinho is to Copy n Paste the Original.

I think it is ridiculous that Konami cant at least do team roster updates as the season goes on for online gamers. Something like this would take practically no time at all to do and could even be done by some trainee.

I guess you can see it as, you are the manager, so the team plays how you chose, not how the real life managers chose.

In online mode, it will not be possible to play against Brazil with a full strength Italy side with Del Piero et al brought back into the fold.

Hmmmm that's a controversial view... Invisible stats... I like the sound of that, and when I think about it, I suppose they are actually there; if you tried to copy and paste everything I wonder if it would still run or kick like him? That is surely an invisible stat?

I know, but if you take one team and have different people using it, not everyone is going to play the same system, even though they have the exact same squad.

EDIT: And about the invisible stats, I have no doubt in my mind it's there. Take the players who can do the flip-flap move, or the look away pass, for example.

I think the guys who create the patches for the PC version of the game (correct kits, chants, whole new leagues etc) know a bit more about all this kind of thing.

Around the time of PES3, I made up from scratch an 80's Dundee United and 80's Aberdeen sides (Scottish 'New Firm' phenomenon with much 80's success, both domestically and in Europe). It was a pain staking procedure but I was very proud of my end result until a guy called Neil explained to me that that the people who actually patch the game have a program that allows them to edit over 100 stats as opposed to the 30 or so that game allows to be edited.

I also used 2 small time english outfits for my Scottish 80's SPL sensations..... Despite both teams being laden with talent, games between the two sides would always be very scrappy (although very entertaining) and when playing 80's Dundee United Vs Inter, it really did feel like plucky British team chancing their luck against slick Italian giants cos the games AI ensured Inter were a well oiled machine compared with the souped up turf thumping Derby upon which my creation had been superimposed.

I know, but if you take one team and have different people using it, not everyone is going to play the same system, even though they have the exact same squad.

Yeah...but its still pants....Variety being the spice of life an all that.

That's me over there! Using Argentina! And if the weather's nice, maybe Nigeria.

Once I get a legitimate copy, I'd like to play against you guys. And every once in a while, perhaps you'll indulge me and we'll play some shite team vs shite team matches. That's when men stand out from the crowd of boys :D
