Just to clear this up. Removing the front panel of your PS2 so you can use a slide tool is easy and doesnt damage your console. You need to turn it on, open the drive then switch off the console with the switch at the rear. Turn the console over and undo the small black screw in the corner - then from what I remeber you need to careful unclip the drive cover and remove it. Switch the power back on and your ready to slide.
