How to make PES3 more challenging-and realistic

One thing that's always bugged me about PES3 is that I feel the marking isn't very tight, it's just too easy to find space and to get from one end of the pitch to the other. So, I tried a simple edit a la PES2, and the game has improved drastically IMO.

try this: put a marking star to all players (including forwards!) on a couple of teams (may I suggest Man U and Arsenal?), play a few games, and experienced PES3ers will notice the difference. The game becomes much tighter all round, your players are closed down much more quickly, it's harder to run into space and a passing game becomes more important. Almost gone are the daft CPU scripted runs down the wing, because your SBs are positioned better. In fact, generally players are positioned better so there's not so much of that 'what the f.. is my player doing there?' saga. Scoring is now much harder, back are the 10min 1-0 games (i play 4 or 5*) - I guess it makes defending a bit easier too but only for the right reasons - i.e your defenders are behaving much more sensibly. All in all, it feels a bit more like WE7.

I've been playing with this edit for a while now and I've modified it slightly so wingers and forwards no longer have marking stars, this frees up the wings a bit and forces you to use the flanks more rather than driving through midfield. Just a personal preference. I've gone back to the unedited PES3 and it really grates on me now, I just can't play it. I hate editing as much as the next man but for me this was worth it.

Has anyone else tried this? I know some people did for PES2 but I think most of us are edit-weary after that.

Hey, that's great thinking... never even crossed my mind to try that... mostly because I can't stand single player anymore, after weekends and weekends of beer and 2, 3 and 4 player PES3.. the CPU AI just doesn't stack up to your hoon mates!

Next time I fire up PES, I'll try that.

i agree elfinke... there is no comparison between CPU AI and mates (with beer of course)... it is too fun playing against your mates... but it sucks that i dotn get much of a chance to play against mates any more.. but.. ohh well.. sounds like a good idea but... i will just have to woop elfinke's arse when he comes back to town next :p

The changes I suggested have an effect in two player games too as it affects all non-player-controlled players behaviour. At least now I can start ML again knowing I won't get bored after two seasons....

There's a bit of scope for improving the AI by adjusting the special abilities - you can make players go on more forward runs by giving them a reaction star for example. I've given all my keepers a 1 on 1 special ability star cause they tend to be cack in those situations, and maybe I'm imagining it but they seem to be coming up with some improved performances.
