I really wanted to like the game...

I played 2007 a lot, and I was hoping they had really improved 2008, but after a whole bunch of games I'm tired of playing against the controls instead of the other team.
How many times do my guys have to pass it to no where because I accidentally held the stick a *bit* more center than right?
How many times do I have to deal with passing it down the field just to see, oh no he's offsides? No way for me to know that unless I was studying the little map at the bottom.
How many times do I have to pass it directly to a defender, because my guy decided to lead the ball in the most directly stupid way ever?

This game is about fighting against the controls, not your opponent. It's deeply saddening that this is the best soccer game out there.

Yeah, this years version is quite bad, but i still play it, sometimes. The passing, you just have to get used to it like when i used to pass the ball it went straight to the opposition and i was like
"WTF?, not to him"
But now ive gotten used to it and most of my passes now go where i want them to go. Go to "Practice Mode" and just keep passing to your team-mates, then when you are ready play a match and just try and string as-many passes together. Sometimes it helps if you have the difficulty on say "Top-Player" or "Professional" because this means they will close you down quicker, which forces you to pass quicker and thats how you can get better at passes :)

Also, :welcome2: to the site :)

I was hoping my frustrations pretty much amounted to newbee inexperience, but the learning curve shouldn't be like this. I mean, the game is a cakewalk on beginner. Routinely shutting out the AI 8-0 is a pretty hollow victory. On the opposite end of frustration, upping the difficulty to mere amateur forces me to trade cross-pitch shots, or simply clear the ball out of danger in the most annoying manner. Then when the computer scores, makes me want to throw my PSP across the room. This would be fine if the level of play was 'top player' or whatever. Instead, the game is reminecent(sp?) of those equally irritating fight games, where a complex combination of button presses is what's required to master basic moves.

Then when the computer switches your defender well behind the AI attacker...?!?

Oh god, I *hate* it when the computer changes players on you at the exact wrong moment. And I hate it even more when you go in to tackle a ball away, and at that very moment, unbeknownst to yourself, you had the ball so you kick it out of play, yeay!

The game in general is too easy, though I know what you mean about analog control. I hate it too, and am finding it very hard to adapt. Luckily, on PC I could use the d-pad (PS2 controller) when it turned to be too frustrating, but I need to learn how to use the damned stick for future football titles. I feel for you.

BTW, I have no problem with analog control in other kinds of games, so perhaps it's something the developers should improve with their system. Something like the AI being a bit smarter and not assume that you're always aiming at the EXACT angle you're actually aiming. But then you'd have a lot of "not to him, you idiot, pass to open space!" issues.
