Making players stay put

Can anyone help?
I'm finding it difficult to make players stay put.
Two examples...
1. if there is an attacking throw-in on the left, my right winger will come across the ball?
2. I want my defensive midfield man to hang back in the middle for corners to pick up any errant headers or clearances that come my way and slam them in from the edge of the box. However, he will always appear in the box for corners (I have not set him up to go up for corners).

Any tips as to how to get them to retain their positions from set pieces and throw-ins?

Can't help you with throw-ins, but with corners, assuming you play 4-4-2 with one of your centre mids taking corners:

Have at least 2 players from the back coming up, and have a winger taking the corner, you should have your guy on the edge.

Push your defensive midfielder as far back as you on the tactic page.
He should then be ready to bang in a goal or two but it is very hard to get them to hit balls as they are cleared.

throw in are a disaster

I've found this also. I think it has something to do with tactics. I play left and right side attack and have noticed that the winger takes the throw. I think this causes the other winger to come over and continue the attack.

If you don't play left and right attack then I have no idea. Either way I agree it's annoying.

Yes, it's annoying, but it can also offer you an advantage. So your RMF comes over to the left for a left-sided throw - has the oppo LB followed him? Nope. You now have an advantage, I think...

If the Holy Grail of attacking football is fluid football, moments like these should be savoured and appreciated. IMHO, of course.

DMF and corners I don't know...but there do tend to be people in the right kind of positions....I know for a fact the Attack/Defence level has a direct influence on who goes up for corners...

Sorry if this isn't helpful.

Edited for confusion over RMFs/LBs.
