I've seen many people having possession for long periods, then when they lose the ball they get sooo pressured to win it back they rush and sent other players and slide...

That was the way I played previously too.

A Few tips....
1. Don't set any man markers there useless
2. Don't use Square to press all the time, Only when you need to
3. Set the Defensive mid to run back

I think the Man marking works as long as you don't switch to another player, so have one man always on him.

Also I reckon if you've got a quality centre back with high stats in Leadership ?(can't remember what its called) then set him as your captain and your players seem to keep their line pretty well.

The main one is just make sure you don't push people so far out of position by ball chasing !! and use the :L1: + :R1: or :R2: to change there defence/attack level (you'll understand after a while if you look at the little colours below your players name.)

what I do is this - it's a bit tricky at start, but once u get the hang of it it's solid defense.
when on your opponents half - use the player u control to apply some kind of pressure - don't get to close, don't use R1, just be about 3' from their player (also look where can they pass - good option is to stand in the directon of their best passing option). but that's not the importnat bit.
as soon as you see they are going to move into your own half - switch to someone who's farther down the pitch, and press [] to send someone on their player. use the player you control to close their passing routes. do not press X - it will move the guy u control towards their player - which u don't want to happen. If their player dribbles past the computer controled defender - u can use the guy u control to take the ball out of their possession. again, press X only when really near to the guy in possession.
and lay of the R1- that's the first thing to do - as if u get to snatch the ball outta the attacker's possession while pressing R1 the ball will bounce 5 yards or so, and that's a gamble - another attacker can get hold of possession, and when the computer cheats - they will get possession in a very convenient place (I.E wide open or something).
good luck

aah noted gollan

i find that just having a dmf sitting infront of the back 4 does help, someone like steven gerrard or makelele will thrive in that position

try out this formation

coupled with what gollan said

also defenders with "D-Line Control" special ability help keep your back 4 in line and tells them when to apply the offside trap automatically

Old school saying but practise makes perfect you always find that sometimes your team seems to be pulled apart all of the time but this just sometimes happens in football and ya just have to work on your defensive game a bit
