My thoughts on EA Sports, FIFA, Konami and PES.

I'v had a few things that have been on my mind for a while now and I wasn’t going to post, but as I’m sat here doing absolutely zilch and I cant sleep, I thought I would. I would fully appreciate your time reading this (It might be a little long) and please respond if you feel the same way with me or even if you disagree with my points.

Instead of me baffling on for too long, let me first cut a long story short. I Played PES from 1 to 2008 (Like most of you on here) and loved every minute of it, didn’t even touch a FIFA in those years, Bought FIFA 08 (THE LAST BEST NEXT-GEN FIFA GAME IMHO) and was kind of converted just by the fact that Konami had gotten a little lazy with PES and i could play football on FIFA 08.

FIFA 09 is when the problems online started to happen (Funnily enough a change of dev’s for that game to), I had little hope in FIFA 10, and it turned out exactly how I thought it would from day one of news breaking out. (Glitch, Cheese, Glitch, Deflection, Bounce, Bounce, Chip.....GOAL!)

The community breaks FIFA, but EA Sports have a habit and tend to sell you virtually the same game (Bar a few "new" add-ons) each year and there is not enough significant improvement at all each year to warrant a new game. The massive problem I have with FIFA is the community that plays it online, those that have played FIFA 10 online will know just how bad it is, especially online with what I like to call "glitchfest pro-clubs"

However EA are just as bad, they make games based on what they think is a representation of real life (a "simulation" they say) but is it, is it really?

Yes you can say that PES "has" been robotic down the years, but just play FIFA for a while and although it might be more fluid and smooth, it is definitely not any more simulation than what PES is or has ever been.

......Here is the reason why, it’s all to do with the attitude and the views of EA Sports.

This maybe a little off-topic. But I remember when Fight Night Round 4 was in the making (and this sums up EA Sports perfectly for me) the main dev a bloke called “Brizzo” gave a interview talking about the new game FNR4, he said, and I quote....

"We have looked at boxing and we believe styles make fights (I agree with that) so to help us make the game we went to watch some LIVE fights (Fair enough). Mayweather vs. De La Hoya and we've even watched old tapes of Hagler vs. Hearns and to us at EA, those 2 fights alone were really not sim to us"

Are you serious? A REAL FIGHT is not simulation to EA? That got me so so so so angry. To think these are the guys "making" our game(s)!

It’s almost like EA Sports cater for themselves (Although they say they listen to "feedback" each year) I really don’t think they do! But because they’re so mainstream now, everybody jumps on the bandwagon(s)!

Its like those who make FIFA have an attitude somewhere along the lines of:

"We watched Liverpool vs Birmingham and it was 0-0, SO THAT WAS REALLLY NOT SIM!, Yet we also went to Istanbul to watch - Liverpool vs AC Milan and it was 3-3 and it went to penalties, now THATS A GAME OF FOOTBALL! So every game online with FIFA MUST BE....3-3, 4-3, and 4-4!"

From day 1 of news breaking out for FIFA 11, I refused to buy the game or even download its demo and thought, "right that’s it!" I don’t care what any FIFA fan boy screams at me saying "FIFA's BETTER THAN PES" "PES IS ARCADE!" Enough is ENOUGH! I was going back to the king to get a true game, and something I knew I could enjoy.

I mean the main selling points for EA this year were "Pro-Passing and Personality+" (They love to give a fancy name to simple things to make it look good) and to me passing was a fundamental to be fixed with the game ANYWAY, therefore IT SHOULD'NT be the main selling point of the game! Because of all the fuss about ping-pong passing, it was normal for it to be sorted (Even though from what I’ve heard from people that have played the demo it still hasn’t been)

EA's pitch for FIFA 11 should have been more like:

"Right this year for FIFA 11 we have fixed the passing so that errors can occur and ping-pong passing is a goner....unless you practice and get good at the game to play in that way! Personality+ will make the game look and feel more realistic BUT the main thing that FIFA 11 has that separates it from previous FIFA's and our competition (PES) is.......*INSERT NEW INTUITIVE, FRESH IMPROVEMENT*......"

See what I’m saying? But there is none of that with FIFA 11, and for me, deep down and being honest, EA Sports have made FIFA 09 3 times on the trot.....FIFA 10, FIFA WC2010 and now FIFA 11, the game hasn’t changed enough at all in those 2/3years.

So with me totally abandoning FIFA and EA Sports I promised myself and all my mates that want "an automatic style of game play and everything done for them on FIFA" I was getting PES 2011 and couldn’t care less if they didn’t get it. Shove FIFA where the sun doesn’t shine lads! To which they all laughed at me saying PES is crap blah blah blah blah.

So while the hypocrite fan boys are lapping up FIFA like its something brand-new and different…..here I am playing the REAL football game, that’s improved so much from last year it’s just remarkable.

Konami HAVE listened to the fans and not made it based on what they believe in this time around. They MADE FOOTBALL!

I DREAD to think just how many games I’ve had on this PES 2011 demo now, it’s got that replay factor and button connection of old for me and I feel myself saying "Just one more game" all the pissing time LMAO!

I love the fact YOU CAN make a mistake, and only have yourself to blame 95% of the time. Yes I have a few niggles here and there, especially with consistency of the difficulties and with the shooting at times.

The power bar on shooting feels good yet sometimes in-consistent. For instance you'll power a shot up to about half way and it will go flying in, top corner, no fuss and very accurate....and on another occasion you'll hit the same shot, same power, and the ball will barely reach the goal and looks very "floaty".

(But fingers crossed these things are small enough to be polished over for the full game.) (I think they will be)

But I have to tell you this game is fucking sublime! The way the ball moves in the air is magnificent at times and breathtaking when you see the ball bend towards goal at the last minute, it’s all very realistic.

Graphics are better and in one word STUNNING!

Smoother, more fluid, free-er....and to me a far better representation of football than what FIFA and EA Sports think football is. You can see Konami have worked REALLY hard this year!

The one thing I hope so much for is that the community over on FIFA don’t jump ship over to PES to come on and wreck that, hopefully after 5 minutes of them playing the game and being unable to make one pass, that will soon see them fuck of back on FIFA 09.....I mean FIFA 11, sorry.

The trouble with the FIFA community is that they have gotten so used to the AI doing everything for them, so when they play PES and think F*CK THAT it’s too hard (Let me think of an excuse for that) Oh that’s right…..it’s too arcadey!

Yet we all know even now that FIFA will get all the rave reviews 10/10, 5 Stars...because that’s just EA Sports and reviewers for you....and we all know those same reviewers will pick fault with PES in every single way.

But that won’t change a thing; I won’t be paying any attention this year to the mainstream BS football game.

PES is back to its best and don’t let anybody tell you any different.

Roll on the 8th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Craney91.

I flash read this, but I totally agree with you about fight night round 4, I use to be a serious boxing fan, and EA were giving it the large about how great the game was gonna be, i bought the game on release, played about 6/7 games, never played it again for months, its fucking rubbish, i could land 200 punches in a round with Kelly Pavlik, its nothing like a SIM. EA sports are really starting to piss me off with the way they make games in general, they hype shit like crazy but im not seeing it in the end product and they do not test games either which is why they end up with about 70 bugs. Fifa 09 was superb for its time, that was the last real good game of football i played prior to this years pes demo, EA had a whole year to sort out basic fucking shit like, the WEATHER, basically in fifa 09, you hardly played games at night in the career mode, nearly all the games were in the day, EVERYONE complained about it, cos playing champions league games at 8am in the morning is one of the most stupid things ive ever seen,

Guess what, fifa 10..........they STILL didnt sort it. If you play career mode in the Kick and rush league (premier league) or Bundesliga, every fucking game is played in the rain, or outcast, or night, no fucking sun, what have EA got against the sun??? are they vampires or some shit??

Classic example of EA Sport, hyping the 360 dribbling, still couldnt correct basic shit like the weather after a year of development.

Id urge you to watch this, it sums up EA Sports in a nutshell.

All credits to Gambeino for the videos and the reaction. I felt exactly the same way, and i still do today about EA Sports and FIFA today allbeit this is about Fight Night i see simularities in attitudes with FIFA.

There is 2 parts to the video, Part 1 "Brizzo" basically talks about the counter system of FNR4 and Part 2 is all about what EA Sports see a simulation as. So id skip part 1 and watch part 2. Absoloutely MIND BOGGLING!

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bauCYGHvBw&feature=related

F*CK EA SPORTS.

Very good op, that must have taken you a fair while to write up. Pes 2011 is a truly great start for konami getting back on track to making the ultimate soccer sim.

The way i see it , things can only get better as konami have a great base to work from now. It plays a great game of soccer as it is, but over time get the little niggles ironed out and nothing will touch it.
