need information on how to get started with this whole "modding and patching' thing.

o.k so I'm new here, but after playing WE6:FE on my modded GameCube and then buying a PS2 to play WE7 I for the US PS2. I'd like to know WHAT ezaxtly do i have to do to play WE8 OR PES4 for my PS2 when they DO come out. I mean I'm completely unaware of how to mod my PS2. I mean can I send it out to get modded like i did with my GameCube or is it much more complicated? i heard about the slide card but DO NOT want to use THAT option(seeming as it may destroy the cd tray mechanism) With that said how do i then patch say a Japanes version game to look like the menus are in English? I have a iMAC NOT a PC so it's definitely a chore finding working programs to do patching like this i would assume. Any ANY help would be great.
