New player: cant play any games, can only watch them?

Hi, I have just installed pes2001 today. the install seemed to go fine. when i try to play any matches from any game mode, they show up in that 'view/watch match' type of mode. despite having set up the game and controller correctly,. I cannot play any games at all. I have just moved from pes2009 to 2011, so I know the game well.
