Yeah, after splashing 30 quid out on PES3 I'm left wondering WHY???, because it's more or less the same as WE7. Someone should have told me......

If you'd spent any amount of time on websites like pesinsight or issextreme then you would have been aware of this fact for quite some time, like the rest of us. That'll teach you!

Well, i've played the game thoroughly over the weekend and i'm overjoyed with it, to be honest. The developers are obviously aiming at more realistic tv-style presentation, and IMO i think they've pulled this off with aplomb.
The commentary is much, much better and the controls have been honed to perfection. Being able to flick the ball over your player's head is a most rewarding experience. They've improved the long-passes as well: they're far less sensitive than before, so you're less likely to over-hit the pass.

The AI has definitely been ramped up, which is great because you really have to use skill to score. Looks like i'll be playing this until next year, then.

PES3 IS NOT AS GOOD AS PE2 AND HERE IS WHY:

OK now I appreciate we all have been waiting for the PAL PES3 to hit out shores, and some of us can't accept that it may not quite be as good as we were expecting. But please hear me out, and no knee jerk reactions.

I have been playing PES2 since it replaced the original almost every other night since it came out. I accepted it had flaws, but it was, and still is an incredible game of football. I was sooo looking forward to PES3 that I rushed out and got it on the weekend loaded it up and oh....

-PES3 simply does not feel right. The ball feels too 'light' and there is a lightness to shooting that is really not very satisfying. The sense of a heavy hitting shot seems to have vanished and been replaced by a ping pong.

- The goalkeeping is dire. In fact the keepers seem to parry everything. Some people have been saying it is a harder game. It seems like the goal keepers have been taking lessons from David James.

- The action replays seem to have this weird sort of blurred effect. Like a sort of aim at TV style presentation, sort of blurring the picture a bit to make it seem more realistic but ending up making the players look like they don't 'fit' on the background. The replays are also very glitchy which brings me on to..

-The STUTTER! my my my. I have seen a lot of posts on this and it simply is not acceptable from Konami. In fact it is poor programming. If it was a lens problem then why do all my other games run fine? Why does PE2 run smooth? This is a programming problem for sure. I don't care if some people say they arn't getting it. Its a massive problem and I keep my PS2 very clean and tidy. In fact I hear people are getting it on the silver PS2 too which has just come out. It seems like the programmers have badly messed up here.

- Shooting is really hard to control and seems to be more random than before. It is light and inaccurate. The game has been made into a more fast 'no time on the ball' arcade fest with loads of 'on the rebound' arcade style goals.

- The only good things are the improved vollying/crossing and a few extra bits of animation. It really is not much more than that. In many respects the game has gone backwards.

Now I know you will flame me, or some of you will, but just admit it to yourselves rather than being blinkered, there are critical flaws with this game and I may just take it back to the shop and continue playing PES2 like this one never happened.

We are opinionated, aren't we? Other people's opinions are as valid as your own - just because you don't like Pro evo 3 doesn't mean that everyone else MUST agree with YOU! If you don't like it, then that's your decision - don't try and force that decision on other people who are more than capable of making their own minds up.

Once again, though, you're trying to make out as if only your opinion is valid. That's perfectly reasonable if you yourself come to those conclusions, but it's another thing entirely to say that in time others will agree with you. Just try and accept that there are other people who have come to their own conclusions about the game which are at odds with yours. This doesn't make them blinkered, or in denial, it means that everyone has different tastes.

The only point that i would agree with you is the stutter, but then that doesn't detract from the game for me - I can live with it.

And less of the Leeds knocking - that's like kicking a man when he's down lol.

Ok dude, maybe I worded badly. I am just sorely dissapointed by the flaws I see in the game. I think PES2 could be the pinnacle in the series for me!

I am on to Konami about this stutter problem as a matter of fact. A girl in customer services says no one has complained about it so far (do i believe this?). Please anyone with the stutter problem EMAIL KONAMI AND MAYBE THEY WILL RELEASE ANOTHER VERSION AND WITHDRAW THE CURRENT ONE!!

if you give PES 3 a chance it IS better than 2, and is better than all competition on the market today.

you have a right to express your opinion, but play it for a week and i think you will come back from the darkside, but if you dont, its your loss buddy. exchange it for another game, not everybody will like it but 99% of football fans WILL.

No problem. But I would not call PES2 'the darkside'. I just feel that (at present) PES2 is a mroe realistic game of football that allows you to really ('dig in') feel the weight of the ball and shoot with power. P3 is too arcade like in feel and the goalkeepers are poor. Ok so I admit the vollying is cool, and there are some new skill moves but overall a lot of flaws havn't been fixed (like the lack of tackling moves ) and more flaws have been introduced.

endlesssnameless, I do see your point about the ball weight and a few things like that but I don't understand how you can say that PES3 is more arcade than PES2. What about the lack of a defence in PES2? Holes everywhere and defenders parting to give you a free run as well as the dribble-a-thon goals all over the place? Plus there are too many sweet-spot goals in PES2 as well. PES3 does feel different and most will get used to it in time. Doesn't PES3 feel more like PES1? Even Konami admitted that PES2 was a big mistake and that they screwed up with it. Yes the shooting is more difficult in PES3 but after some practice you will be scoring with volleys from outside the area. I can't see any realism with PES2 shots where they pretty much all head for the target.

There are a few bad points for PES3 but not enough to make PES2 a better game. For me.

The thing with PES2 shooting is that you can fire off powerful shots really easily. You can still do this in 3, it just takes more effort - believe me, i've already sent one Roberto Carlos screamer in from 25 yards.

Also, i've noticed that if you don't force the keeper to come for crosses/corners then chances are he'll concede a goal. If you use the triangle it makes a big difference as he'll rush out and catch most of them.

I don't know if I agree that shooting is easier on PE2. I just think it feels more right, and is also more intuitive. The power bar on the new one seems to bear less relation to shot height or speed in p3 than it did in p2. Also the gaps in defence in PS2 didn't occur against the computer if you play on a hard mode, and against a friend it all depends on if you are bringing people back and your strategy. PS3 has just made the default strategy more defensive. You can tinker with that on PS2 and have no problems. The thing about PS2 is the goalkeepers were so much better that in one on one situations you still had to make an effort to score. PS3 is just easy as the keepers are falling all over the place! PS3 deffo feels more arcade like with the faster pace and the emphasis on lack of space and tricks.

my arguement (may sound the weirdest statement ever) but i think its true:

"PES 3 is so realistic, it's actually unrealistic"

i think its so realistic that its hard to get used to, its not arcadey in the slightest, and i think the reason PES2 was so popular was its slight arcadey feel, you could just pick it up and beat anybody on your day.

also, why is everyone slagging off the goalies? i think they're much better. i've said

"Ooooooooh, what a save"

more times in my first weekend with Pro evo 3 than in the previous two years with1 & 2 put together

i did not think PES2 was easy to pick up at all. In fact I felt it was very deep. An experienced player could easily slay a friend who came round who was inexperienced (unlike Fifa). PS3 seems to be like a speedy game of ping pong. Footie i sall about space and weight and digging in. Not one big scramble for a light helium filled ball.

re: Goalkeepers

I've noticed that the goalies are more 'semi-automatic' than before. You used to be allowed to let the goalie do everything on his own, but it seems now that you have to direct him manually in certain situations.

IMO the keepers are actually better when you have more control over them. In the previous pro evos if you made the keeper go for a cross/corner, the ball would frequently end up in the back of the net. In #3 he's much more likely to punch the ball away or catch it.

The way players adjust their bodys for a bouncing ball for starters, the ball is not just connected with high in the air or on the ground anymore. As for the comments of 'lack time on the ball', have you ever watched a top flight game, you get two touches on average i would say. Just because you cant run rings around players with owen or henry anymore it doesn't make it like an arcade, its became a game build ups and creative play. The graphics have improved and the some of the goals simply look sublime, i've stood in the air with both hands aloft already against my mates. It is truely the game of champions and i can now say i play it (and like it) more than championship manager, another wonderful title.

Seconded. Pro Evo #3 is pretty damn realistic, it's like the World Cup is on when I'm playing it.

As better men than me have said, PES3 is than a much more natural progression from PES1 than it is from PES2.

Dont get me wrong PES2 advanced the series in lots of ways but not crucially in the simulation/realistic gameplay stakes e.g. the gameplay is much more about passing, movement, and crucially it isnt easy to create a goalscoring opportunity. That essentially is football isnt it. Especially at the highest level with two top teams, when clear cut chances are few and far between and it often comes down a 1-0 or 2-1 win, not a 5-4 goalfest.

Ive actually been playing PES1 untill very recently as i just didnt like PES2's arcadeyness and unbalanced (too much attacking)style. IMO PES3 offers PES1's simulation style with knobs on, with 3* star providing a challenging, rewarding and yes sometimes frustrating game.

I wouldnt have it any other way.

Funnily enough i felt that PE3 was too attack based. You have loads of moves for the attacker and hardly any tackling options. In fact goals were being scored ten a penny in PES3 for me anyway. I am really surprised many feel PE2 was more arcadey, its slower and the ball is more weighty , the goalkeepers are better and its harder to score. I thought that made it more of a simulation than the ping pong of pe3.

Finally!!! I' had to read trough this hole post and find one guy that thinks exactly as I do, well exept from this kezz fellow. Anyway I also sat down with this most highly avaited game and started to play yesturday, I played a game and then turned of the game. I was silent for a while before I started to check the package if it said FIFA instead of PES. But no, it said PES3 with a bald referee on the cover ..ok. Then what the hell what was that I was playing ?? ..where did the "Evolution" go ?

I totally agree with you endlessnameless, I'm also a pes2 junkiee and that's for a reason. I mean where was that feel that makes you sacrifice a marrige for Evo footie.. it was gone ?! this game was even not fun for a match ? ..I know guys who have spend a pretty penny on this game is offcourse trying to find some happines with lies like "Best Footie Ever". BS ! peeps who say that should by FIFA I think..

Well I trew it out the window and now await's FIFA and hope they tryed to copy PES2 as much as possible for their new release. In the mean time me and the bud's are going to enjoy PES2.
