First off I'm 28, played all Pro Evo games in the past, with the odd exception. Fifa 10 was the first jump across from Pro Evo I've made in recent years although I bought PES 2010 too. I must say that after years of playing PES, Fifa 2010 was a good experience. Generally I favour the underdog and so I'm always kind of gunning for Pro Evo to win the day without their millions of pounds to splash on a game.
This year I read some reviews of them both, and decided to opt for Pro Evo 2011. First impressions were wtf. The game seemed crap, heart fell a little and combined with some other early reviews was not looking too good. But I persevered with it and after a week or two of constant playing, my opinion had changed dramatically. I thought it was excellent. The freedom of passing, the ball physics, the way body position absolutely affected everything with shooting becoming an art form. The graphics are excellent (stuff like the commentary etc doesn't exactly bother me although I can understand people saying it's crap). Master League looked awesome again. So I play and play, with Liverpool as my choice. I was gripped with it, win lose or draw, I played it and played it. At first there were some niggles, but the gameplay seemed excellent. First season as Liverpool I scraped into the top four. Along the way I was given a football lesson by Chelsea but found that the more defensive minded teams were getting the better of me, always a sucker for the counter attack.
Let me just say I play the game on 15 mins, Top Player, and everything as manual as can be. I was in football heaven. I also play the game at -2 speed. BUT, one thing started to bother me and is starting to be a bit of a game killer now. POSSESSION. I have played a season and a half and I haven't played ONE GAME where I've had less possession than the opposition. In fact it's not out of the ordinary for me to have 60-65% of the possession. I started looking around the forums and there's a good guide as to how the sliders work etc on a site called JustPES I think, to stop the sort of arcade feel I put my teams pressure down to something like 6 and player support to something like 8. This then stops the arcade like back and forth scenario. But the counter problem to that is, is that I then seemed to get more possession.
The more I get into PES, the more I'm starting to notice things. The problem is I don't win all the time, I'm on Top Player but I'm probably not as good as the online bandits, but I am what I would regard quite good at these games. I don't mind playing possession, I literally play it like a proper game of football. I don't mind passing it back, waiting an eternity for gaps and half chances, so therefore I want to be pressured much more. If the opposition pressure me (like a team like Chelsea seem to have a pressure rating of 16), then the game ironically becomes a little easier, because I can draw the attackers and midfield to me, before hitting quick passes through the midfield and to the strikers...if the pressure of the opposition is low, then the game becomes harder to win, but I end up with 70% possession. I think someone touched on it here somewhere, maybe AMATEUR, but it's too easy in general to get into the opposition half and final third.
Everything else I love about the game. I love the funny real life bounces and deflections, I love the sizzling goals you can score, screamers which are few and far between, but when you do get it right feels good. I also loved the way the CPU pressures you with their tactics to different situations, but now I also feel I've mastered that because I too have fine tuned everything to counter every CPU situation. Pressure used to tell towards the end of games when the CPU was trailing, but now with my subtle tactic switches I can more or less play out a 1-0 if I wanted to, or counter them for more goals.
I also loved/do love (still don't know if this is in fact THE problem) the passing. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that because the passing is so free, it actually makes the game easier. The other thing is that because I'm starting to defend properly and have finally got my tactics right, the CPU seems only to want to score in one way now. A kind of zig zag passing system through the middle of the pitch. Sometimes it is hard to defend though as the CPU through ball renders the defenders static for an instant which gives the CPU enough time to pounce. Same with my through balls, which in my opinion are too good and too accurate.
I even rented FIFA 11 yesterday and although I like the complete package more of PES, the gameplay seems harder in FIFA. I have to concentrate on every single pass and getting to the opposition final third is hard. I've only played it a day but scoring seems hard and I'm only on World Class.
So....I'm kind of stuck in limbo. I want PES to be as it is, but I want it harder for me to construct build up play to get to the oppo final third. I want the opposition to pressure me, but pressure me the right way. I don't just want them lunging at me like headless chickens whilst completely losing their shape and leaving huge spaces in midfield that I can just ping an accurate through ball.
I want to be on the receiving end of possession against the teams that hold the ball and I want to able to beat teams, like an Arsenal say on the counter attack because they keep possession from me. I beat Arsenal 5-1 the other day, and had 60% possession, on Top Player!
Sorry for the whinge but am really a Pro Evo fan at heart, but the challenge may just have gone out of Pro Evo 11 sails and I may have a bash at Fifa for a bit, against my heart. I know people are analysing what the sliders are all about in relation to the game dynamics, so hopefully either I can get a fuller game experience with slider sets or maybe a patch will be downloaded to kind of make the game harder. Like I say, I'm a very good solid player, but by no means what I compete with the hardcore gamers that play it online 24/7, so to kind of almost master the offline game in two weeks is a little disappointing. Be happy to know your thoughts anyways, was my first post...ta
