I just got into the Master League thing last night and after many resets I figured couple things out to improve your 1st year Team (With Castalo, Minanda and company) This is on 5* level too.
I think the main reason why people don't want to join your team is because your team hasn't won a championship, doing poorly in the standings and if its a trade, you're offering a very poor player in return even though he might be making the same salary as the person you're interested in. In case of a free agent, you might set the transfer points to 5000 and he STILL won't come cause your team is shit.
The best way to improve your team is to sign free agents. The free agents you should be looking at is the players that make 200 in terms of salary first. Theres PLENTY of sleepers there that will improve your team dramatically. I can name some now:
Choi Tae Uk
Ahn Jung Hwan
Yoo Sang Choo etc etc (Korean biased sorry

)
The reason why I say this is because if you sign a free agent thats making 800 then you're putting all your eggs in one basket. I think the key to get a guarantee sign is to sign free agents long term. i.e 5 years.
Alright now you got some extra shitty players on your team still. Now what do you do? You got two options. Send em off or trade them for some prospects, i.e the 17 year olds that will gain mad experience if you play them. Theres a condition though. You have to make sure that the player that you're trading off will benefit the other team (Usually if the offense/defence is higher). I'm pretty sure even if their salaries equal, the computer ain't stupid and use that as rule of thumb. (Try trading Minanda for Davies (irish guy) and set the transfer points to 8000 odd points. They won't accept it). Next do a search and try choosing players that match the attribute that you want for your team. For me, I put dribbling, speed and acceleration greatly over anything else cause I'm so sick of the gay slow turn around with all the 1st year players when I'm in the box so I'm willing to give up Offence and Defence in return for ludacris speed cause I'll be do the thinking for the players.

Next you have to determine the transfer points. If the player your trading will help the other team improve their offence, defence then try offering 1000 points or higher depending how badly you want to guarantee to nab him. This is where the 'ebay' fun comes in when you place your bid (usually if you trade away a guy with a higher salary the transfer points will start at 1) If he doesn't workout try signing other prospects and look at who you're offering in return.
Other tips is to bookmark the young players/or players that you want. Although the young players stats may be a tad low, the great thing about them is that they gain MAD experience points from playing a game. If theres a penalty kick, give it to them. They'll gain alot from it. Train your players also.
Hope this helps
