The defending is absolute rubbish. I know that PES2 apparently has 3 forms of tackle but the [] is useless. It's either X or O. There should be an intermediate tackle which is putting your foot in but not diving in. You obviously have to get the timing right (otherwise you'd get a foul with a max of a yellow card) but it would improve on soft tackle or chance of a red hard tackle.

Also (although it's quite good when the ref cocks up with fouls and offsides actually) the game should cut out the free kicks given for absolutely nothing a bit.

Reb, pressing Square when defending is for the secondary press and isn't great for tacking - more used for closing down the space.

I have to agree that PES1 plays better than PES2, it just seems alot less frantic and pressured, with crosses and through balls being more effective and defending being easier. There is also no progression in graphical quality between the two games and if anything the crowd noise in PES1 is better.

In defence of PES2 the Master league was improved and the kits were made a little more realistic (although most are woefully inaccurate still). The game is a bit smoother and there are more player animations, so it wasnt a total backwards step.

The reason defences can become unorganised in PES2 is that people use the press buttons all the time which drags players out of position and opens holes. If you lay off the press buttons a little and try and hold your defensive line you may find defending easier.
