well i was playin me bro n then he pulled the cobtroller too far back so then it fell off the shelf so now we've got the ps2 standing horizantally.

My mate did a similar thing. It was a firday night and instead of going out on the piss we thought we would stop in with plenty tinny's and get pissed playing each other on PES2.

My mate got too drunk and knocked his station off the bench twice! It was his station but my PES2. Since I got it back the disc is scratched and I think it might be off that night. it crashed the other day on me and I tried a game with Spanish commentary but it would not come on!

The scratchs are in a half circles so it must have been when the disc has been spinning. :( :(

Ok cheers for the advice guys, i'll just try cleaning the disc up a bit. otherwise i spose i could open up the ps2 but i dont wana break it :\

where do you open it up?? i cant see any screws....

This is a little late but don't worry, opening and cleaning your PS2 is nearly 100% safe. Everyone's worried at the start but it's a breeze and, in the end, your PS2 will be working as well as the day you bought it.

Do a simple search on Google. They are plenty of guides. GameFAQS has many, for sure.

Robinho, I don't think it's a good idea to open up the PS2 or it may cause a bigger problem. Try one of those CD lens cleaners with the little brushes on the disk. Or maybe try one of those spray cans of air to give a bit of an air blast to the vents of the PS2 to get rid of external dust.

Read above. It is a fine idea to open up your PS2 and clean it out. Unless you're a COMPLETE dolt, you won't mess things up and I'm sure Robinho will manage. Those CD lens cleaners you mentioned were actually reported by SCEE to mess up your lens more so I would stay well clear although SCEE isn't always right (as you can imagine). I mentioned the cans of compressed air too, they work well and better inside the PS2. You'd be surprised at the amount of dust I found inside my friend's PS2 and he's, generally, a clean person.

The compressed air is the best method. Its the safest if you have encounter any problems such as the dreaded Disc read error. Also use if you dont intend to break warranty seal.

My pes2 is throwing up 'disc read error' when i put games specific for ps2 in but when i put in old psx games they work fine??? :-\

ive tried cleaning the lens with one of those blue cloths for cleaning cd's but it obviously hasn't had any effect ... what is best to use to clean the lens?? and any other tips for the whole cleaning process??

Well, all PSOne discs are CDs and most PS2 games are DVDs. Is that the case with you? If so, it could be a voltage problem.

We used a Q-Tip with some rubbing alcohol to clean my friend's lens, not a cloth, as instructed by this guide. It has a voltage section too, so you might find that helpful.

You see this whole q-tip business confused me - i had no idea what a q-tip was until i did a google image search for it last night and saw COTTON BUDS!!! you damned americans with your weird words for objects .. they're called COTTON BUDS!!

anyway i used a COTTON BUD (not a q-tip) today on the lens and i successfully played a quick match on pes2  so it seems like it worked fine (note: i beat norway 2-1 with wales. simon davies scored a spectacular scissor kick and john hartson broke away and finished well :D)

Cleaning the lens seems to work really well and it's fairly easy. here's my quick guide

**
Turn your ps2 over so you can access the bottom of it - there should be rubber covers over screws and some harder covers aswell. take the rubber covers off (you can just use your nails) .. but with the harder covers use a flat-head small screwdriver to get in any of the edges and they should just pop-up.... i think there are approximately 10 holes for screws in total.

Get yourself a + head screwdriver and take all 10 screws out - take note of where the longer screws go - i actually set my screws out on the table in the formation that they came out of the holes.. so the same screws were going in the same holes i took them out of. ..

Once all the screws are removed, turn the pes2 over again so you can see the normal topside and just slip the casing towards you carefully - bring it towards you a bit and then just fold it out to your right hand-side (if you're looking from the normal front-on view)

**make sure you don't rip the cord connecting the eject buttons to the pes2**

once the case is off you should see a thing saying caution : laser blah blah blah don't stare into it.. square thing with 4 VERY TINY screws on (you need a small + screwdriver to take these off - should be no problem tho)

once the casing for the laser disc is off you should see the tiny little laser eye thing which is just a little clear disc thing inside a sorta tiny rectangular box which says 'SONY' on it, funnily enough.

get yourself a cotton bud with some of this said 'rubbing alcohol' on 1 end of the bud - i used this tiny little yellow bottle of stuff which you use to clean cd's - this worked fine.

rub the laser eye in circular motions for about 10 seconds with the DRY side of the cotton bud first and then use the WET side with the alcohol on - circular motions for 20 seconds. go both clockwise and anti-clockwise... after this, use a clean DRY bud to clear off any excess alcohol and it should be cleaned.

whack the laser case on with the screws.. carefully place the big case back on - put all the screws back in their places and put the rubber and harder stops back in their places.

Also give the vents a little hoovering before seeing if your games work again

 hope this helps

My first gen ps2 had the same problem. IT was just some dust on the laser. I blew it out using canned air and then it worked fine for about 5 months. I bought home the PES2 demo, and yeah, it crapped out on me!

Yes Zyg! I opened it all up as I described above and used the DRY, WET, DRY cotton bud formation and, fingers crossed, it's worked fine. I played a quick game earlier with no crashes.

I used a dab of this stuff in a little yellow bottle that comes with a CD cleaner cloth package thingy - it must be some sort of rubbing alcohol tho i guess. Just a little dab on the end, it works v. well - cotton buds
