me and my friends have been playing winning eleven/pro evolution soccer since its early ps2 days (we still call it "WINNING")
and actually played the ps2 versions up until this year when I finally bought a ps3.
ive played pes2012 on the ps3 for about 100 hours now (rough estimate) and although i do like the game and enjoy the challenge, me and my friends are all in agreement that the ps2 versions were just more fun.
we all wish we could just play the ps2 game with ps3 graphics.
i dont consider next gen pes as an upgraded ps2 version, i consider it a completely different game.
its also strange to see how pes 2008, which is basically universally hated, was the first pes to really get me hooked to pes from a single players perspective. i consider that as a personal classic and i think the hatred comes from the nex gen versions.
2009 was a transition year but 2010 and 2011 were very strong and so much fun on the ps2.
it was strange to see so much hatred for pes over the past years when i just enjoyed and saw subtle improvements over each version on my ps2.
but NOW i understand the hatred.... me and my friends aren't learning how to play a soccer game, we are learning how to overcome "a game". there is so much ridiculousness and although we are steadily getting better, is there really a sense of accomplishment at preventing pure ridiculousness as opposed to just feeling like we got better at a soccer game? not really
for example: if you dont make your wall jump, approx. 80% of free kicks go in regardless of the team and the player. i mean really? i feel embarrassed for the creators of the game.
pes has lost the magic of the ps2 versions. whenever the weekend comes around for me and my friends to play, it feels like we're diffusing a bomb as opposed to playing a video game.
ps2 pes never felt like that, even at its worst.
alas, i cannot even look at ps2 pes anymore withough cringing at the graphics. ive moved on. ill continue playing ps3 pes, probably until i die, and i hope one day the magic will come back.
if not, ill always have pes 2008 on the ps2 waiting for me.
