Basically I have no idea how to take them in this game. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the hell I'm supposed to be doing?

from 'wide' camera angle

press down = near corner
press up = far corner
press back = less shot power
press forward = more shot power

practice a couple of minutes in training and you will get used to it...
