Webspace File Transfer & File Size Reduction Guides

Ok, many (if not most of you) will know all about this & it won't apply to you...
But if you're like me & want an easy way of accessing your free internet space & uploading goals, here's a link you should try:

Core Ftp Lite

It's a free program, with excellent reviews. Download is 2.09mb = 5 or 6 mins on a 56k.
Suitable for Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP

Many thanks to all those who have helped me in my epic quest to sort this, namely:
Hitman, Paul B & Mutu
Remember the File Transfer Program is Stevieboyproof, so it is basic
:D

jeez!
Assuming you are entitled to free webspace with your ISP...

Once downloaded, set the program up. Then enter your webspace URL.
ie on btopenworld:
Example:
www.btinternet.com/~YourAccountUsername
Then select a "username" & "password" for your ftp.
This is to stop others doing anything other than viewing what you upload.
Select "PASV active". Put a tick in the box.
There's a help function if you really get stuck.

To upload, first close the small manual connection box that first appears. Then re-connect using "File" then "quick connect". This is very important & saves a lot of hassle (for me, anyway).
Then, simply select what folders you want to upload from, ie "my videos", then drag from left hand side box & drop in right hand side box.
It should upload automatically. There are other ways, but that's the most user-friendly.

Then, post the link in the appropriate forum as a new thread.
The link should be of the format:
http://www.btinternet.com/~YourAccountUsename/NameOfFile.avi or mpg etc

It is caps sensitive though, so type carefully!
Any more probs, post here & I'll try to help! :)

File size reduction using "VirtualDub":

Download & install VirtualDub from Here

Once fully installed:
1) Goto File
2) Open Video File
3) Select Video from your video docs
4) Click “Audio”, select “No Audio”
5) Then “Video”, then “Compression”
6) Then select codec, ie “DivX5.1.1 Codec”
7) Click “Configure”
8) Next, lower bitrate. 526 kb per second is a good general guide
9) Click “Ok” until you get back to where the video was opened
10) Finally, select “File” & “Save as avi”

Play around with the bitrate until you get a file that is nicely reduced in size, but is still reasonably high in quality.
Obviously, the lower the bitrate, the smaller the file will be, but the quality of the replay will be worse. Over-compression leads to a clouding effect; similar to one’s impaired vision after a few too many stella’s.

Thanks to hb for help with this guide. :)

You have to install the free divx codec bundle first. The same one that most people use to view the avi's on this gallery.

DivX Free codec download:
Get it here

It should then automatically appear on the VDub codec list.
However, I have had the 5.1.1 codec disappear from the VDub codec menu list for no apparent reason! If this happens, just close VDub down & start again. Hopefully it should re-appear. If not, all I can suggest is re-insatalling both VDub & the divx codec bundle.

Thanks for you kindly help. I would try to get my file below 1mb

May I also suggest a freespace site here.
http://www.mymoviestar.com/
There is 100mb free space and you can also use their webpage to upload. It is somewhat more friend to those didn't use ftp program before.

Best regards,
C.Y.

what if we dont have a url Stevie...

Your ISP should provide a guide or how to create your own webpage or similar.
The URL on btinternet is "ftp.btinternet.com" or something like that.
As I say, check for "how to" or "FAQ's" with your ISP.

Guide to using RAD Video Tools:

1. Select the vid file.
2. Click on 'convert a file' (bottom left-ish).
3. In the right column, click on 'convert'.
4. Under 'Compressor', I use 'DivX codec 4.12' but I will soon experiment with others.
Edit:- Try using the XviD MPEG-4 Codec instead [one from the bottom of the list]
5. Click OK.
File will convert.

If the converted file is too big, repeat the earlier steps and after 4, go to the 'configure' box instead of OK.
6. Reduce the 'output video bitstream' and click OK.
Keep reducing this kilobit/second value till the file is the size you want.

7. If you have multiple views of the same goal, rename all the files as "1", "2" and so on (with the file extension they come with) and the program will ask you if you want all the vids to be converted together. If you say Yes, then it will produce a longer video with all of the views (in order).

If I have some replays on DVD, can I use any of the above progs to compress them? Can I play it on Power DVD and somehow edit the film before compressing i.e cut it down a bit etc?

I just found this thread guys and Stevie I'm trying to use your guide to compress this MPEG goal I've saved using my TV Tuner but in the very first step when I try to go open video file and choose my file, it says : "No Video Frames Found in MPEG file" :(
