what are the numbers at the side of the players name?

I get numbers that represent the four buttons on my gamepad. What they mean, I haven't a freaking idea.

Oh, having never played the PES series before, I'll throw in a newbie question of my own - what does the colored bar mean next to the name?

The coloured bar is the stamina/fatigue of your players.

And to the original poster, if your on about while during play, the squares and circles etc, are to show the particular strategy that you are currently employing.

You can change these strategies if you go into the team menu by pressing start.

So, in BAL, those things are basicly useless?

And just to clarify, the colored bars (from top to bottom colored Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue) represent Fatigue and Stamina, just as the green bar beneath the name?

No they're not useless, you should check what the strategies are, and adapt your play based on what strategies your manager is telling you to play; For example, if your manager is telling you to attack down the right side, you should play the ball over to your right side etc etc

And the red to purple arrows are the condition your player is on. For example....if your player has a red arrow, then it means he is on fire, and he'll be able to go for longer....If hes on a blue arrow, it means hes not as much up for the match, and will put in a poorer performance...I am of course speaking generally though.

The Green bar is what represents your stamina and the even smaller bar underneath this green bar is the bar that represents your fatigue ; The fuller the bar is, the more fatigued you are.

Edit : arshavin, read my previous post...

Yeah Dale's right. I very rarely use any of my players that are blue and never play them if they're purple. Green and above....

Ravex, those little coloured blocks from next to the name represent the team's Attack/Defense levels, the higher the coloured block is the more attack-minded the team is at the moment. You can set it to manual and change them using LT+RT/RB. Basically if the red block is lit, the team plays up higher the pitch, more players move forward (useful for offensive corners/FKs or when you need to score fast) and if the blue one is shown then the team plays deeper into their half (useful for defensive set pieces and for guarding your lead).
