Ok, so I'm new to this forum but not to PES. I've been playing since the first instalment on the Playstation 2, to the Xbox 360 versions, and own them all. I also managed to sample the earlier ISS games on the PSone and even the Super Nintendo (SNES).
There's a couple of things I'd like to see implemented, and others fixed, in PES 2012. I can't speak for the rest of the PES community, so these are just my personal, relatively unbiased views which I've put quite a lot of thought into. Any control references will be for the Xbox 360 version, as that's the one I have. Possible changes are as follows:
>The penalty system. It has already been mentioned on CVG.com that the camera angle will be changed back, but i'd like to see a power bar added. The problem with the last two games was that the penalties were over-complicated and confusing, if not too difficult to master - a back-to-basics approach would cure this, with the player simply choosing the direction. An addition of choosing the right power, and possibly a finesse shot option - so as not to over-simplify things - would also be welcome.
>Simple little errors, some of which didn't exist in the previous game (such as not being able to choose which preferred side a wide players plays on when you use the search feature in the Master League; and the automatic substitution of a lightly injured player from your starting 11 in the ML, so you have to manually change it back each time they return from injury), to be ironed out.
>Kick-off and goalkeeper (with the ball in his hands) control restored to the player. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There was nothing wrong with the old way, with a forced timer for online games. I've lost count of how many times my team has kicked off and instantly lost possession because I've pressed the A button in the meantime, or trying to drop the ball at the keeper's feet only for him to do that hand gesture thing and kick it long anyway.
>The PES 2010 custom replay angles to be restored. The angles in 2011 were very poor, with it being impossible to get a clear view of the action most of the time (option 1 was too low, option 2 was too close, whereas option 4 - the "freecam" or "ghostcam" as it's usually called - was wholly unnecessary). Also, the option to view the custom angle replays should be mapped to a button during the standard replay (e.g. press the X button to see it) so players no longer have to press the start button three times if they want to skip the celebration and ensuing replays. One standard replay should suffice.
>"Link Feints", activated with the Left Bumper and a flick of the right stick on the Xbox 360, should be taken out altogether. They are a pointless and clumsy addition, in my opinion, which fly in the face of the notion of more control being offered by PES 2011, by allowing players to utilize preset skill combinations, without actually possessing any skill themselves.
>The difficulty level needs to be raised - not simply by adding another "star", as seen in the previous games, but by making the transition from one difficulty to the next a little steeper overall. "Top Player" is far too easy at the moment.
>The quick substitution menu returned - I know the whole formation screen has been revamped, but a simple list menu (as a separate option in the pause menu) like before would mean substitutions could be made much quicker, without the need for the drag-and-drop mechanic.
>Swap deals in the ML, i.e. player-plus-cash deals, being reintroduced.
>Constant updates after every game, e.g. "Player stats increased by one point" and "Sponsorship bonus requirement met" to be removed, or at least contained to the Topics section. The logo for the Topics section could contain a number, to alert the player to the number of new messages which have yet to be read.

>The old training mini-games to return. They were fun!
>As were the penguin costumes, ostriches and dinosaurs from PES 6.
>The various "add-ons" purchased with the in-game points, such as the option to start the ML with more funds, to be removed. Instead, starting funds should be set to default if the player chooses the fictional player line-up, or pre-determined depending on team ranking if they choose the real line-up.
>The "add-on" option of choosing a real player in Become a Legend should be a choice to begin with, not an unlockable option.
>More varied achievements would be welcome, as opposed to the ones which reoccur in every iteration of the series. Possible examples include achievements for getting particular high scores in training games (mentioned above).
>Commentary is, as ever, quite poor (though it thankfully is a far cry from the days of the first PES). Improvements could be made to make it feel as dynamic and free-flowing as the FIFA series.
[The Online Modes]
>There seem to be far too many lobbies, with very few players in them. Fewer lobbies would be sufficient, and a revamped menu system would make them more accessible.
>It was very difficult to get a foothold in the online ML, due to the matchmaking service constantly pairing me against teams which boasted all-star lineups when I had little more than the fictional ML players at my disposal. I did like the fluctuating player value system though.
>Legends mode was by far the most enjoyable mode. I would like to see this points-scoring system added to Become a Legend, or at least an option to choose to activate it if some people don't want it.
>Lag was also an issue in some games, but this could have been due to the distance between myself and other players. I do know that previous PES titles suffered from atrocious lag issues, with many games in PES 2008 being rendered unplayable for me.
So that's all I have to say, for the moment. Having bought the FIFA titles from '08 to '10 alongside PES (due to the spate of overwhelmingly positive reviews they were getting), I still believe that PES is the better game to play. The player control in FIFA still feels too ponderous and sluggish, and the shooting feels tame. Player likenesses are inferior too, though player animations are excellent. The fact remains that no amount of licenced teams or eye candy can make up for raw gameplay. With minor improvements, I believe PES can become top dog again in the eyes of the critics.
It always was for me anyway.
