On the 360 go to System on the dashboard, then network settings, then to T'est Xbox Live Connection' and it should come up with a list of things such as:

Network Adapter
Wireless Network
IP Address
DNS
MTU
ICMP
Xbox Live
NAT

now do the tests (which start automatically) and it should say either 'comfirmed' or 'failed' next to Network adapter etc. tell me what has failed and i will try and help you. :)

ok this means that the 360 can't find an IP address, another question are you plugged directly into the modem or through a computer on a wireless network?

Yeah, if you have a wireless network try this, Go to network connections in control pannel on your pc, then you should have 2 or 3 icons, there is wireless Network Connection, and Local Area Connection, right click on Wireless Network Connection and go to the Advanced tab at the top of the page, Then you should get an option to 'Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection', click the little box next to this so it has the little green tick in it, then click OK and restart your pc. now see if the 360 Xbox Live connection works.

ok, go to nthe network settings on the 360 again, then go down to Edit settings. Go onto the DNS settings and change the Primary DNS Server to 192.168.1.1, leave the secondary, see if that works and if it doesn't tell me.

Dont go paying people on ebay for a backwards compatible disk, I cant believe people get away with that!

Just goto xbox.com and you can download the patch from there, burn to a cd-dvd and insert it in the 360, job done
