If I told you that there were no lame goals on FIFA 2008.......

If I told you that FIFA 2008 (Next Gen) felt very much like PES1 but with loads more moves, manouvres, and much better AI.

Would you be tempted to give it a serious try?

What happens if I told you that there was no visible cheap methods of scoring on Next Gen FIFA with playability almost on a par with the latest PES game.

Would you be tempted to give it a serious chance then?

Its true. 2 player FIFA 08 feels very much like Winning Eleven 5 (PES1), the game is played at a much more measured pace where every goal has to be worked hard at and derived from slick team-work; beating players is possible but requires timing and/or skillful use of the trick-stick; and there really does not seem to be any lame goal exploits of the kind that have destroyed ProEv ever since the horrendously flawed PES4.

Although I have played next gen FIFA a few times b4 now, tonight was the first time I gave it a good solid go......and guess what...its good....its really really good and left me addicted and pining for more.

Granted, there are certain elements of the PES gameplay which totally outstrips FIFA such as ProEv's super immediate responsiveness; fast paced reflex testing opportunities; and fluid ball physics. But the big problem with ProEv for the past three years is that the 2 player game always turns into a big 'Lame-Goals-R-Us' cut-back fest and from what I have seen of the demo, PES 2008 aint gonna be no different.

Whilst PES edges it over FIFA on raw gameplay....The FIFA AI engine is much more watertight which in the long term will make for far more interesting and enduring 2 player encounters which is after all the bread n butter of any video football game.

I await the full release of PES2008 with interest as just now, I am teetering on the brink of conversion.

Before anyone knocks what I am saying, I strongly suggest they give FIFA a PROPER trial beforehand.

i got FIFA 08 a few weeks ago, i played it for about 3 days.

back playing Pro Evo 6 now.

i scored plenty of shite goals because either the keeper decided he had better things to do than catch the ball or because the ball had an unrealistic bounce in the box.

No one is willing to listen around here to FIFA 08 being a decent game of football Mat...

I am. Check my posts in the FIFA 08 thread. The PS3 demo was shocking but when I played it in HMV on the 360, I simply could not believe it was the same game. FIFA 08 is pretty damn good.

Running away from the referee never stopped you getting booked though did it

I bought the game for my 360, it was enjoyable for about a day, and that was probably cos it was a different game.

Once you've played a few matches it feels exactly like every other Fifa game, and im my opinion thats not a good thing.

The last decent Fifa was Fifa 98 Road To The World Cup, i played that to death and after that it started getting shit.

I had it for a fortnight then took it back to get max trade in when PES comes out. It was ok at first but then it gets very repetitive. All the patterns of play tend to be the same. Same happened with Fifa07.

can i get a hallelujah.

lol fifa is really bad. its only half decent for the 1 month wait for pes. plus the commentators on fifa are tards! lol really has anyone listened to them? "great save by the keeper" and you would of kicked the ball wide with no movement from the keeper.

I can tell from all you detractors posts that you have not given FIFA 2008 a fair shot.

Like I have said, EA have practically cut n paste ProEV1s game engine and added their own arms and legs onto it. Whilst the lack of responisiveness may be a bit frustrating at times and the game never really manages to hit top gear, there is no way that anyone can label the gameplay as repetative as the only way to get forward is to mix your play up....unlike PES2008 where it is often just a case of CHARRGE!

Like I said before on gameplay alone...PES 2008 is still a good bit ahead of FIFA. However, PES is still riddled with lame exploits which quite frankly drag the game into the gutter. FIFA is not. There are no lame goals on FIFA which to me, is a hugely important factor, perhaps a factor alone which can differentiate FIFA as the game of choice this year.

I have not been playing Fifa(one of my favourite game until year 2002) for quite some time so I thought I give it a go at my friend's place. I don't really like it. I agree that EA has put in a lot of effort in terms of features and all but the players are still not moving the way they should. The defenders especially are so lazy. It is extremely difficult to get them to pressure or chase after the striker unlike PES/WE where we can press certain buttons. Unless EA can get this right, they will always lag behind PES/WE despite all their great features and licensed teams. Just after 5 games or so, I was already bored. What is the point of exploring other features.

Besides the exploitive cut-back there are no 'lame goals' I can think of in PES that don't happen in real life.

Listen mate, i DID give Fifa a fair shot, i paid £45 for it so i wouldn't NOT.

Like I said, its too samey, in my opinion its nothing like PES1 at all.

All PES games have at least been playable, Fifa 08 however is not.

Thats is the only lame goal in PES, I agree.

what about dribbling passing and dribbling around in circles within the 18 yard box for an eternity until the certain goal scoring opportunity presents itself.....you dont see that in real life....cos in real life....attackers just aint allowed so much time.

Well...what can I say...I am pining for a game of FIFA right now and will be off round my mates l8r on on to do just that.

I dont play average games or even good games. I only play fucking great games cos anything less than 'great' just wont hold my attention long.

If you are saying FIFA is unplayable and 'samey' then I reckon it is cos you have picked up the pad, tried to play it like it was PES6, and got jacked off cos you couldnt and cos the controls are a bit different and u couldnt be arsed learning them.

Not true mate, I used to be a massive fan of Fifa, I've bought it EVERY year since i can remember and it still disappoints. Granted, it's getting better, but for me, Pro Evo is a game that can be played all year round as long as you want until the next installment.

Fifa is too predictable after you've won a few matches you know what you need to do. Pro is different.

To be honest mate, I think it is, once i'd figured out to cross from a certain point and with a tall striker you can almost guarantee it will beat the keeper.

Obviously the licences and official kits are a huge plus for Fifa and always have been since they had them, but i've noticed despite the fact you can tell some players apart, they all seem to look the same, with that strange grumpy looking face, its a bit weird, do you know what I mean?

Yeah..... I have never quite seen where people are coming from when they all say that FIFA looks better cos it dont. For me, PES 2008 'looks' better in every department from player likeness to the much smoother sprite animations.

Assuming you have actually played FIFA 08 on a next gen console....you may well be right and I may be well be wrong as I have only had about 20 or so games on it.......all against my mates.

But from what I am hearing from guys who have played it a lot, online and offline, is that there are no blatant exploit goal types emerging......(aside from a rather didgy method of scoring from halfway line right from kick off)
