Playstation 3

I've always wanted to play Bioshock but never did, so I think this will be a purchase. Its a shame its not released until October.

My friend's PS3 wouldn't read any discs the other day and he was told it was because of the system update, apparently its a widespread problem related perhaps to GTA. Sure hope mine doesn't fuck up, my PS2 was the most reliable console ever so i'll be dissapointed if this console breaks down.

Doubt it has anything to do with GTA though. From various PS3 forums I visited, most seems to agree that blu-ray driver failure is not caused by the games.

Always fancied it myself, so when I got an Xbox I picked up a second hand copy. Good game. Graphically great, nice weapon/power mix. Ultimately a touch repetative. Worth a punt though.

Free new content is all that was promised. Other than that it looks like a straight forward port. I hope they dont fuck it up.

I'm sorry but that has to be the funniest thing I've read in a long time. The PS2 has never been a reliable console. Just type in faulty PS2 in the search on ebay.co.uk and you'll see exactly what I mean. You must be one of the lucky ones.

My fat PS2 died on me after 5 years. I had to buy a new one (slim PS2) because the local Engineers were charging an arm and a leg to get the old one repaired. I had to sell my fat PS2 on ebay for Spares/Repairs only in the end.

So it wouldn't surprise me at all if PS3s are developing faults.

That should be correct. The Firmware Update only effects the OS that controls the PS3 console. It does not effect the Blu-Ray drive itself.

My guess is that if the Blu-Ray drive is developing faults then it is probably because of a failing Lens. I suspected that this might happen though seeing as the PS3 is supposed to use both a Blue and Red Laser Lens. It was only going to cause problems later on.

I guess I was lucky. I had my PS2 for over 5 years and never had a single problem. Most of my friends had a PS2 as well and they never had any mishaps either, and some of them had their PS2 longer than I had.

You cant blame me for thinking its a reliable console, back then I wasn't that interested in the internet and so I didn't know of how its apparent unreliability was ticking you and many other people off. Also did you notice how I put my PS2 was the most reliable console? Wasn't referring to anyone elses...

Only having 1 problem with your PS2 after 5 years isn't really that bad anyway...

Papa

Thank you for reading.
Sorry for really obvious question but is it possible to play PS2 games on a PS3 (in the same way you could play PS1 games on the PS2)? I'm sure for anyone with a PS3 that's really obvious but I don't have one, I'm thinking of upgrading and I'm just wondering if I'll still be able to play the old games.

You can on the 60gb one but not the 40gb.

Yes I did notice that you said that your PS2 console was reliable. It's just that lots of people have reported problems with their PS2s over the years.

I do realise what you're saying about 1 problem in 5 years is not bad but if I'm being brutally honest, a failing Lens even after 5 years is a huge problem. It's clearly a manufacturing defect.

I paid £200 for my fat PS2 in 2001 and I expected it to last for as long as I wanted to use it.

Every other Games Console that I've bought over the past 10-15 years had never died on me. This is why I was so ticked off when my PS2 finally keeled over. It was giving me Disc Read Errors at first and only for certain types of discs and then it just stopped reading anything at all - including a DVD Lens Cleaner Disc.

However, I have been hearing that these sort of problems are not just happening with PS2s. I have heard horror stories about the Xbox 360 and PS3s breaking down so I suppose that softens the blow a little.

But it definitely looks like both Sony and Microsoft are incapable of building a reliable Games Console. Maybe it's because the technology is so advanced that its just getting harder to build reliable consoles.

One thing I do know is that when I eventually buy a PS3, I think I'm gonna be looking at buying Breakdown Cover for it.

Once warranty of PS3 runs out, you can pay £5 a month to Sony and receive unlimited warranty.

That adds up to £60 per year. Not worth it in my opinion.

Domestic & General do it for £84 per year which looks like a rip-off compared to what Sony are offering.

But I think what Argos are offering is the best option to go for. Argos are doing a 3 year Breakdown Cover for just £40. That calculates to around £1.11p per month.

I know I'd take that offer.

I wonder if they'll bring out a slimmer PS3. I'd buy it if they did.

Same here. The current PS3 is way too big and fat not to mention that it weighs about 4 kilograms as well. I think I would prefer to buy a slim model just to save a bit of space.
