Konami Grab Champions League License?!?!

This has been circulating around the internet for a few days now, but we chose to stay away from it because it sounded ludicrous. It still does, but the more we think about it the more we think its a step Konami could, and need to take.

Italian website PlayReview reported a few days ago that PES 2009 will have the Champions League license in the game. In the report its states that Sony has something to do with it. The problem is there’s a lot in that post that I’m positive is definite rubbish. For e.g. Kaka being the cover star - We at WENB are 100% sure Messi is the star of the game. PlayReview also mentions the fact that Konami have grasped the FIFA license from EA. A big no no, the FSB guys have confirmed as much.

So why aren’t we so critical about the Champions League story? Don’t get us wrong, we are, it’s just that we think its a move Konami should make. It’s an opportunity for them grab some licenses they cant acquire by other means. For example, EA will never give up the English England League License - not a chance. So with the CL they could have the top four teams (in this case Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool) fully licensed INCLUDING the usual other 2 teams they have. It could also tie in with the Master League, finish top four and go straight into an official tournament. The benefits are huge for a game full of authentication issues.

So while this news is a million miles away from being the truth, I hope Konami is aware of how often the license had changed hands in recent years and realise its attainable.

So what does everybody think about this?

I think it would be a step in the right direction, sure the are numerous gameplay problems that need to be sorted out first, but by obtaining the license to the champions league this could lead to a improved master league, we could probably even have champions league music for entrance scenes now, as well as licensed champions league balls, and champions league kits.

i hope its true but I'll only believe it when its officially announced and can see in game pics of the licenses.

A load of pish. I have no idea why WENB have published a rumour like this. Clearly just a sneaky attempt to get people excited and visiting their site.

Let's analyse what the PlayReview.it site says:

According to reliable voices, in fact, Konami has managed to win it official licenses Fifa of all the major leagues.
I don't think so. FIFA has that tied down until 2010 at the earliest.

According to other voices, Konami avrebe also acquired the license of Champions League (of which Sony is sponsoring institutional) to put it in the game
Why would Sony help Konami?

Finally, another reliable voice concerns testimonial dell'edizione this year, which should be the Brazilian Milan Kakà.
No, it'll be Torres and Messi.

Yeah wishful thinking. Konami will not change something they have practically kept exactly the same for 10 years. I just think PES09 will not be much different to what we have now.

I dont think they know who to change it, and i certainly dont think they listen to anything the fans have to sya about the game. Evidence over previous years proves that.

Why would Sony help Konami?

It would mean the licenses would only appear on the psp, ps2 and ps3 versions, meaning Sony would have a unique selling point...the more games sold the more money they would get..though i'm not sure what cut Sony gets. It does sound unlikely that this license thing is anything to get excited about, but this could be beneficial to Sony and Konami

..also Sony and their brand Playstation are sponsers of the Champions League..jus saying. It's probably still unlikely though.

Sad but truth.. PES has been more or less the same game for almost 5 YEARS now!!

I still think PES6 (or PES5) is the best Football game around -but- it's been 5 years of the same shite, it's time to improve it. And then again, I didn't bought a PS3 just so I could play PES6 with better Graphics. I want a game that goes beyond PES4, is that asking for too much?? I don't think so.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me IF Sony helped Konami or EA Sports -because- it is a known FACT that Sony's PS3 has not been as profitable as Sony expected it to be -and- it is also a FACT, that a Football game with the OFFICIAL Champions League License would be hugely profitable BOTH; for the company that produced the game, and for Sony.

According to latest update here, Konami did grab the CL license but might release it under diff game than PES2009??? If its true, it would suck. I think most people wont buy the game just for the CL license, it would be a bad move from konami, unless they produce much2 more improvement that I doubt would be there.

UEFA have indeed given the licence to Konami this time around. UEFA are pushing hard for there to be a stand-alone game, which means Konami may not be able to include it in PES 2009.

Konami selling out ?

They used to be solely concentrated on the gameplay of the series, now it seems to have taken a backseat in order to get the licenses to attract the FIFA fans dare I say it ? I mean, everyone knew PES was never about the licenses, it was about the gameplay, and even the edit mode since that was fun. After playing PES 2008, and I still play it regularly for some unknown reason, maybe it's just the new direction Konami are taking the series in, PES = The New FIFA ?

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Actually, CL license means NOTHING to me unless they include it in PES2009. That is what I want to see in master league, not some WEFA thing. I hope they dont go the wrong directions, such a shame if they do go the wrong way.

i totally hope this will be true, i hate lookin at fifa licences and goin back to superb pro evo and seeing no licence and i hope they fully licence all the english teams and maybe some others. To be honest master league is ok to me, its like anoda customised league that nobody can copy, its kul, but the real thing will be better and konami shuld keep up on the graphics pes8 was klas, jst some players like bentdnar looked rough, hope they improve that, then pes can rule

This will be a complete and utter tragedy if they make this a stand-alone game, but like Hitman said, the financial benefits are doing so are far too tempting for Konami/UEFA to allow it to happen any other way.
