Battlefield is a good game, maybe not better than CoD4 though. Battlefield is probably harder and a bit more mental but online is an enjoyable experience. However, it has no kill cam and fewer modes than CoD. If you haven't got CoD already, get it.

In all seriousness, I'd say avoid PES2008 and Beijing 2008 (I'm not a fan of Unreal Tournament 3 either.) I don't know if you like tennis games but I've heard good things about Top Spin 3.

I don't know whether this is your type of game or not, but Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is good. I'm not sure how long it would keep you enthralled, I guess it depends if you get addicted to it.
