UK retail points to 360 Christmas price-cut

Looks like another price drop from Microsoft. Good on them, making it a competitive market and all that.
But when the hell are Sony going to drop the price of the 40Gb PS3?
They've just released an 80GB PS3 a month ago and at the same price as the 40GB PS3. Plus they've got a 160GB PS3 coming out on October 31st which is also going to retail at £299.99.
I just don't understand Sony's pricing logic. If they don't drop their price soon, then they will probably miss out on any potential sales to Microsoft because of their lower pricing and the fact that you can buy 3 different versions of the Xbox 360 at any time.

Yeah I know that. But who is going to buy a 40GB PS3 at £300 when you can get an 80GB or 160GB PS3 at the same price?
Nobody will buy those 40GB PS3s at £300 when there is an 80GB and 160GB PS3 out. I can tell you that right now.
In my opinion, the only way that Sony can shift those 40GB PS3s is to drop the price.

So logically, there has to be a price drop coming for the 40GB PS3. Otherwise, Sony will simply be left with a huge bunch of 40 gigs that they can't sell.

Yeah I want a 40GB PS3 but only if it's reasonably priced i.e. £200 or less.
I'm not willing to buy second hand as I want extended warranty plus breakdown cover if I bought a PS3.
So that could take the total price up to £275 hence the reason why I'm a bit miffed at Sony regarding price drops.
Well since I bought my PS3 a year ago the price has not dropped from £299.99 for a 40 gig version. Whereas the 360 has dropped by £50 I think for the premium. And with them dropping it more it makes you question how many people will actually buy a PS3. As generally new buyers probably would go for the 360, but I suppose with them being at times unreliable that might tempt them to a PS3 along with the built in blu ray player for those who want HD movies.
But at Gamestation both are the same price for the 40 and 80 gig. So they should drop the price a little by Christmas, if not then it will continue to be the third placed console.

Yeah but there is still no guarantee that the price will drop to less than £200.
My guess is that the 40 gig will drop to £250, the 80 gig will stay at £300 and the 160 gig will be £350. That makes a £100 difference between the 3 consoles and looks like the most likeliest pricing strategy that Sony will adapt before the Christmas rush.
I've noticed that every retailer is selling the 40 gig PS3 and the 80 gig PS3 at £300 each. They have been told to do this by Sony until the 40 gig stocks run out (which is doubtful at the moment).
I have to praise Microsoft though for their consistent price drops and the fact that they are actually interested in selling as many Xbox 360 consoles as they can. I think that this is the reason why they are selling the Arcade, Premium and Elite consoles all at the same time. I'm not what you would call a "fanboy" but I have to praise where praise is due.
Sony however, they only seem interested in selling one console at any one time. They only dropped the price of the 60 gig PS3 because they no longer wanted to sell them because of "high production costs" and chose to manufacture the 40 gig PS3s and sell them instead.
If you ask me, this is not gonna persuade people to buy a PS3. All Sony are doing is they are forcing potential customers to buy only the 1 model of PS3 that is available in the shops. You could only buy the 40 gig PS3 for the past year.
It's refreshing to see Microsoft do the opposite to what Sony are doing.
I would like to buy a PS3 at one point but only if it's less than £200. With the way that Sony are going at the moment, I might have to wait until 2012 to get a PS3 which I'm sure you'll agree is not right especially when you consider that the Wii is £180 and the Xbox 360 Arcade console is £160. I think Sony need to re-consider their pricing strategy otherwise like you said, they will be left behind as the 3rd most popular console.

My thoughts exactly. I'd love to have a PS3 but will not even consider it at the ridiculous prices Sony are currently selling them for.

I would normally consider buying an Xbox 360 but I don't like the controller and it doesn't have a Blu-Ray drive. Which is why I'm leaning towards getting a PS3.
The Blu-Ray drive is vital as I'm sure that it is now confirmed as the next-gen video storage format and I'm pretty sure that Blu-Ray will still be around in 10 years time.

Everytime I see a press release by a Sony PR executive, all I keep hearing is "we want to concentrate on maximising profits on the PS3 but we will stick to our original pricing strategy for the forseeable future".
Let me translate that. They're basically saying that they want to make a profit on the PS3 as they are making a loss on each console sold to this date. Sony are counting on the fact that the Playstation brand is the market leader in the Gaming market and that reason alone will increase sales. But, the problem is that no one wants to buy a PS3 at the prices that Sony have set. This means that sales are at a minimum at the moment due to the high price thereby pushing profits down.
Sony are adamant that they will not drop the price as they fear they will be making a further loss on each console. But if you ask me, dropping the price will only attract more sales thereby pushing profits up. The losses they make on each console sold (due to the lower price) is compensated by the increase in sales so profits actually do increase but only by a small margin. I'm no expert on Business but this is basic supply and demand. I just can't see why Sony can't see this.
I'm starting to believe that Sony are just plain greedy.
You would think so but like I said above, Sony are being very stubborn about the price.

I just bought a 40GB PS3 brand new for £200, I saw in Game earlier in my local shopping centre though that the price for 40gb + 80gb are exact same, 60gb is more expensive than both...I don't know if it's because they don't produce them anymore or if they have more USB ports or something, I dunno.
