Fifa 09

Played the demo a few times and I still feel Fifas gameplay is a bit too slow and less responsive than the PES games. The custom tactics looks good and I'm looking forward to some 10v10 action online as I've been playing a lot of 5v5 online on Fifa 08 recently. Although it is 99% of the time completely lag free for me, the online experience of Fifa 08 needs a lot of work.

Which Fifa forums? The demo should be out 3 weeks before the full version of PES is released, probably the 25th September but there is nothing confirmed so who knows? The demo does feel faster than Fifa 08 but I thought Fifa 08 was very slow compared to PES.

800 years ago people thought the world was flat. 100 years ago the world had not seen a world war… and one year ago FIFA almost caught up with PES. In many departments EA’s flagship title was far superior to its rival however, question marks loomed on whether EA could ever match the fluidity and responsiveness that their Japanese rivals had mastered and supplied for over a decade. There has been much hype around FIFA 09, since the first videos of the game appeared and reports filtered down the wire that the response time was indeed sorted. I personally had the pleasure of flying to Vancouver to witness it for myself at EA’s own studios. I was very impressed with what I had seen.

Yesterday, there was a frantic race online to download the highly anticipated demo that was favourably received by the majority. But surprisingly, it was the population that were impressed that stood out. By now most of you are hammering away at the demo and digging deep to find issues with the game that you want rectified. Well, remember that this is not the retail version; it is simply a demo that gives you a good taste of the game but not the whole experience. For this reason above all, I begged my good friends at EA (you know who you are) to let me get my hands on the latest preview code. I got my chance yesterday!

Let’s get down to business. So what did I think? Fantastic to put it lightly, compared to the code I played in Vancouver, this game felt like it had been worked on a whole year. The truth is this was only two months work on top. However, in every aspect the game had been improved. Graphics have been sharpened up and look much more appealing on the eye. The player faces have also been improved, along with the level of detail on the kits. Compared to the Leipzig build this one had only undergone a couple of weeks work. But even then I could tell that it was even more responsive. The fans begged for responsiveness… well you got it with interest. The three words I like to use to describe this game are; organic, fluid and composed. If football games were likened to real life players, then FIFA 09 is clearly in the Zinedine Zidane mould.

The collisions engine has been met with mixed feelings by the fans, most of whom still haven’t got their hands on the game. But believe me when I say, once you see it in action and realise the impact it has on gameplay then you simply cant live without it. No more limbs through players bullsh*t! Every ball, every tackle and every header is contested and that in itself makes FIFA 09 even more of a simulation.

The gameplay engine in FIFA 09 feels so different to last years version it is unreal. A very close friend of mine who was hammering EURO 08 all summer claims it’s even significantly different to that in all aspects. One thing that seems to come under fire online though is the ball physics. I feel that the ball physics in this year game are excellent, so will all the moaners please take a deeper look. There are claims that the ball consistently flies over the bar, however this depends on so many factors its untrue. The balance of your player, the timing of the shot, the type of shot and the momentum your player has before the foot-to-ball impact. In a way shooting in FIFA 09 may have become very technical but in a good way. Once it’s mastered and gamers understand how to set themselves and find the best timing/positioning combo’s then it will become a joy. Saying that hitting the occasional hit-and-hope that flies in also feels great!

So what are my thoughts you ask? Well I do have a review on the way at the end of the month prior to release. So tune in to that for my final verdict on FIFA 09. But as things stand… EA really do have an impressive title on their hands this year. One that I just can't stop playing.

Over and out,

Suff

After playing the demo for a couple of days now, I've got used to the shooting system and I can score some pretty classy goals; It's a lot better this year because you can score all sorts of different goals.

Which difficulty does everybody play on?? easy, medium, hard??

Currently I play on medium; however if I keep winning games (I'm on a 3 game winning streak) I may step up and try the hard one out.

Try playing on 'easy difficulty' mate....win games 2 or 3-0 then once you find 'easy difficulty' too easy, go back up to to 'medium' ;)

Let me know how you get on ;)

I think EA have really over hyped this game, when reading the new features they've included i really thought id buy it over PES, but now ive played the demo i find it poor and similar to Fifa 08 and Euro 08 demos. The shooting has gotten worse from Euro 08, you cant run more than 2 yards before getting tackled, dribbling is a shambles and the game is to slow. I still mange to win with FC Toronto on Mid and Hard levels though. The features i do like is it has good build up play and the the game flows well. This game will be a disappointment after all the hype of it been a 'PES beater' and Pro Evo will begin to bridge the gap this year

Isn't it coming out during the week of release?

Demo was a real letdown. As soon as you get the ball you get tackled, it's so frustrating. i can't notice any of the 250 improvements or what ever it was, except the collisions which do look really good.

You don't get tackled if you're good at keeping the ball; if you try dribbling from half way to score, then you ineviteably get tackled. But if you work the ball and pass it round, then you keep the ball.

First time passes if you're pressured is the key.

The passing system is a marvel I think. Passing really works great in this game. Really responsive, quick and in general really good! I also like the way you can choose to switch players, by either pressing the left bumper (the PES way) OR! by pointing the right analog in the direction of the player you want to control! Excelent figured out there FIFA! Thumps up. But I still don't think the game put me "up there" where I am, when I play PES. I miss being able to quickly enable my teammates to run forward when I want to attack after I've intercepted the ball. In PES I'll just hold left trigger and push right bumper a couple of times, and my team is set to offensive - and I can really spot a difference in how my teammates run forward. In FIFA, so far I have to use the direction button (or what it's called, the non analog direction thingy?!) and that simply doesn' work, for me that is! And eventhough I can set to offensiv/defensive that way, I really can't quite spot the difference...?
When I set the formation, I miss the feeling of being 100% in control. I can see that there are a few more sliding bars, that I don't have control over in the demo, so maybe that would be a bit better in the final build. But what I miss the most, is being able to position every single player the way I want them to! There are a lot of preset formations - all fine and dandy - but I would really like to configure just a little. Is that going to be possible in the final build?
But all in all FIFA has gotten much better. But I still think, that PES just has that extra edge to it - which I'm really not quite able to pinpoint precisely. But a good game none the less - the gab has been closed considerably!
