I'm enjoying it on the whole. Some observations:
One thing I've noticed is that the CPU seems to play rather dirty on Top Player. Any time I get good movement going, the AI starts in with nasty tackles. Out of the maybe five games I've played on Top, the computer has had nearly a straight red and around five yellows per game!
I think manual passing using just directional usage of the right stick has enormous potential. I've always had an extremely hard time getting manual passing to work correctly due to having to push the stick down AND release at the right time while holding a direction. Didn't get along with my hands.
In spite of the above, I'm not sold on the tricks via just left stick/d-pad (though it is the perfect place for the roulette, imo), as I'm having a tough time getting them to work at all, let alone consistently.
AI movement seems much improved, especially going forward (though defenders actually try to defend, too! What a concept!). I really like that if there's an opportunity to score (like, say, a ball to a wide open player at the far post), the AI on your team will actually take the chance before the cursor can change. It makes play less stupid than it could be at times in the past, because even though you may not actually press the button to shoot, your work in the attack (dribbling, passing, drawing defenders, etc...) isn't wasted as often. Keepers are significantly better, though I've noted some kinda weird (ie, physics-defying) things happening when they, for instance, try to stop a really hard or oddly angled shot.
Shooting is a lot more difficult BUT that difficulty is offset well, imo, by the movement and the types of shots/headers you can manage (and the opportunities enabled by AI movement). I've already scored some with Barca and RM that I haven't even SEEN in '08.
Assisted cursor is enormously irritating. Unassisted is quite possibly genius, though it's taking some serious work to adapt to it.
Squad lists seem a little thin compared to some previous versions of the game, particularly Liverpool. A lot of their youth players are missing. Here's hoping Konami hasn't started skimping on the kids in some of the big teams (they have a few of United's, so that's a good sign). Maybe the full game will have updated rosters.
Count me fairly impressed, and I'm by no means a hype-buyer. If anything, I'm often generally disagreeable and borderline absurdly skeptical. Back to playing.
