The main thing about the demo ( PS3 ) that worries me, is the refereeing. Please view this youtube video and watch Man Utd's penalty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t28UmGeb1VI
There's lots of fouls that are given that are way too harsh and i have had ridiculous red cards ( both for me and the computer controlled team ) and it's the only thing that kinda ruins it for me. I worry that the game will become just too frustrating because the refereeing is out of your hands whilst playing, and perfectly good tackles that end up with you winning the ball and then the opposing player running over you whilst you're still sliding and then falling over can result in you getting a red card. I really hope it's because this demo is an apparent early build ( tho i seem to remember the '08 demo apparently being an early build but the final game being virtually indistinguishable from it ). Other than that, the demo, in terms of gameplay, has really grown on me and i am happy that there are 2 footy games worth buying this year. Plus those PES nets, for all their stupid look, do bulge beautifully once the ball hits the back of them!
One final point, re: the above video. It's cool that they made the effort to put in Ronaldo's real life counterpart's penalty run up. Looks pretty good.

After about an hour of playing multiplayer with my brother:

This game is everything that PES 2008 should have been. Way more playable than last years effort, and way more playable than this years FIFA. It brings back that PES magic missing from 2008, but still isn't that "more-ish".

I was very impressed visually, very dynamic use of colour and the stadium looks and feels fantastic. The pitch looks great too for the most part, except on set pieces where it looks a little low res, but I imagine that's a demo bug. The camrea angle could do with a bit of a tweak, especially with the lack of the 1-9 angle range selector but I really am nit picking now. The only other thing was how dark some of the shading is on the shirts at times, but again that could be down to the demo.

Smooth, even flowing and enjoyable pace/gameplay. Some really really nice animation tweaks and new moves make the game feel freer and more like an actual game of football. Shooting feels absolutely fantastic compared to 2008. The nets are a bit baggy for my liking but that's not taking anything away from the quality of the gameplay.

The refs are dissappointing. Some really bad decisions. Enough said.

Goal keepers are a little bit better than last years, and it is harder to score in general but they do still make strange spills as well as the "stand and watch the ball go in" feature from PES 4. They have added a few nice keeper save animations, but they have left some of the strange looking ones in there too.

Defending, attacking, build up play is just great. You can really take control of the game however you desire. Volleying the ball seems to play out exactly how you'd want it to, mainly thanks to the greatly imrpoved crossing of the ball and physics system.

The ball sound is ridiculous, but I can't see them not changing this by the final game, and with the inclusion of commentary it should be fine.

One other silly little thing is how often defenders seem to do that exuberant back heel clearance? Anyone else seen this? They practically back heel it right up the pitch. I wouldn't have minded but it happens a bit too often.

Fortunately I think this game will satisfy me for the year ahead, but as I have said, it's easy to put down and stop playing (or easier than previous titles - except 08 of course) which to me says that there is something lacking. I feel like it's still a ps2 game, which isn't a problem so much, it just feels a bit dated. I am looking forward to the full game and playing the demo when I get home from work!

I also look forward to playing this online without lag.

My thoughts exactly. In every PES game up until 08, there was something that made me itch to play more. As in, I'd ditch friends to play it if need be. This one doesn't seem to have that same attraction. Maybe i'm just growing up?

I hope they bring that back. I use to love putting it on 9 and watching the ball curl into the top of the net.

I think this could be a huge factor for some. We're always going to look back on the older Pros with nostalgic eyes because they brought us so many good memories. Gaming in general for me isn't what it use to be but I guess that's just part of growing up.

my exact thoughts too...

however that said, I did crack out PES 2 and 3 the other day and couldn't stop playing them. But that could just be nostalgia I guess

edit: haha just saw Miggys post after... we're all clearly on the same page here.

just played the demo on the ps3... overall i think its a big improvement in every aspect. keepers have been improved with stupid impossible howlers being few and far between, refereeing is improved but theres still some problems. only thing i dont like is the new way to do tricks. the d pad is too uncomfortable to for example do a 360 turn. also would have liked to be able to see the menus on ps3. well i'll just wait for the 17th. overall rating 8.5/10.

a 360 turn can be done with the (left) analogue stick too

one thing i like, in previous PES games if you accidentally play a crap pass not realising there is a defender between you and your target they always seem to intercept it- in this version, if the defender between you and your target is running, the ball sometimes goes through his legs or he sticks a foot out but due to his momentum misses it. This imo, helps make the game a bit more realistic

Yeah, cause of course all the d-pad tricks are also on the left stick. Which I personally really like! Seeing as these tricks count as movement I think assigning them to the left stick is a great idea, although they wasted the free right stick by making it a manual pass.

Absolutely spot on. I must have played 8 or 9 games last night, the amount of shots I tried from distance and skied was insane, but the more I got into it the more I understood it, I was still getting shots off in the area on target but none really from distance, due to either being crowded out or off balance etc, then when playing with Italy I connected perfectly with a volley, full on, with Andrea Pirlo, it absolutely flew towards goal, straight into Coupet's arms but even so, that felt like a really big moment. If I'd have scored that I'd have gone mental.

Good thing for me is that I go away to Turkey on Sunday night, so when I arrive back there'll be 3 days of work and then 3 days of PES 2009!! Awesome.

Am I the only one that thinks the shooting is shite? It seems too slow now, the ball just drifts. It takes a week for a cross field ball to reach your teammate.

well yes, but occasionally when you press X it sends it to an unintended player! This has been a problem in PES for ages...

Aye thats true, but so far I've had even worse problem with manual pass! Maybe it's just me not being used to it though. I'll try and perfect it in Training when the full game comes out.
