PES 2010: A gamers verdict

Got my copy of PES 2010 last week and have given it a good going over. I didn't like the gameplay much at first but decided to give it a few seasons to see if I grow into it.

My own opinion is that there hasn't been a good football game since PES4, so my expectations for this years release were nice and low. And I havn't been dissapointed.

Most reviewers when review PES 2010 would go on about sound and graphics (though I will touch on these later). But the only thing that really matters in a Pro Evo is the Master League and the gameplay.

Firstly: Master League.

In a word: brilliant!

Propper money! A real challenge to build a club! Relegation scraps! This years version is by far and away the best of the series.

Secondly: Gameplay.

In a word: ****

The gameplay is PES 2010 is nothing short of an abomination which has obviously been coded by a troop of halfwit apes in a jungle clearing.

A few slight niggles:

1. Fouls: the AI simply runs into your player and bashes him off the ball. I have played almost four seasons now and have not had a single penalty, where there were several obvious and clear fouls. To call a game a simulation and then have the AI simply smash the players team all over the pitch (often from behind) with no punishment is simply lazy. Another irritation is when about 6 or 7 players will quickly bunch up one your player like a rugby scrum - its like schools football, and looks very messy.

2. Players: I agree with the sentiment that just being able to dribble your way through defences makes a poor and limited game. However, since when did ANYONE have the pace to match Lennon or Walcott? PES has simply reverted to an old trick of removing pace as a weapon in the game (PES5) - we don't have the time or the ability to program a propper AI, so we will make sure the user can do bugger all to score more than a goal a game.

The sheer lack of intuition: maneuvering even the spritliest and most athletic players in PES 2010 is like helming an oil tanker through lard. You would get more response from a big pile of horse sh*t.

Input delay (or good as):

When I press shoot, SHOOT. Don't take it on your chest, run two or three yards and then get bashed by an AI player and fall over.

You can press a button, go to work, come home, and be back just in time to see what happens. Shocking.

A personal irritation:

Stadiums: Not many are there? When you consider the vast numbers on FIFA games of late. Very poor. For a 'next gen' game, this doesn't cut it at all I'm afraid

Final verdict: PES 2010 = beer coaster :)

In my opinion a once brilliant game series is now as good as finished. I for one won't be buying another PES. A shame really, PES4 was a classic. PES5 was defencive and dull. PES 6 was too easy, PES 2008 was a mess, PES 2009 was also a mess. PES 2010 was the final nail in the coffin.

RIP

Konami shall join the blacklist of sh*tness along with Ubisoft and EA that wont be getting £20 out of me again.

All valid points, but I will hold on to my copy, because it's either that or no football at all. I tried FIFA, twice in fact, and traded it twice. At this point, PES is the lesser of both disasters, so I will stick with it and learn to laugh at its glaring flaws instead of cursing at them.

Totally agree with the OP here, I thought it was so wank I actually regressed back to 2009 after about a week. However Catenaccio you also mention PES 4 being the last good one, coincidentally I've just started playing it again and it's mint! It's on Play.com on PC DVD for about £1.40 if you don't have it already. Trying to see if I can get anyone online with it

Excellent points. But like Wengervision said, it's either this PES 2010 crabb or nothing. I am a huge footy fan(Man United) Wallaaaaaaa Milan 4-0.

For the first time with my history with PES I have created a local club with players and all and actually enjoying it(the creating/editing of kits and the fact that Rooney play for my local club, CIVICS FC.)

In my opinion nothing is preferable to the shizzle that's out at the moment. Konami has fucked up for five games straight now (PES 5, 6, 2008, 2009 and now 10). There is no logical reason to assume it will get any better at all in terms of gameplay. Sure the graphics (which is all seabass cares about these days) and other bits and pieces may get better but the part of the game that actually matters probably wont - they are just not capable of major improvements on a yearly cycle. For me PES is going to join the TIF series on the scrapheap. It's time for a new developer with fresh ideas and a less stale approach. And I don't mean Ubis*ft. PES 4 was fantastic, but its a bit dated now. I don't have any desire to play 2 or 3 seasons building a team of mega stars, get bored because its too easy, and then start again.

RIP PES

Thats why I always say, Konami should release a PES classics bundle pack on the Playstation Store and XBOX Marketplace, like Capcon did for some of their classics. Make the PS2 PES games in HD, add online capabilities and we'd be in heaven! ;-)

I would rate both games

PES when playing your mate = 9/10
PES playing the computer 8/10
PES playing online 3/10

FIFA when playing your mate = 7/10
FIFA playing the computer 7/10
FIFA playing online 8/10

You and others like your are the reason why this game series has gone down the tubes. Because Konami know that whatever dross they pump out each year, enough deluded people will always buy it. The only way Seabass will get the message is if people simply stop buying the game.

That's assuming that your opinion is gospel. I like the game despite it's flaws as well, so I'm not allowed to buy it because you say so?

Hmmm...

All games are flawed by the way, and PES 2010 is definitely a decent game and a sign that things are moving in the right direction IMO. I for one want to buy the game to show them that I appreciate that they are making progress despite the problems. If everyone had your attitude then we would soon only have EA, and once that happens they will release garbage updates every year with a few latest gimmicks and stale/lifeless gameplay.

I hated the game at first - put it to one side for a week or two and then went back. Now Im thoroughly addicted.

I believe its the best football game yet (and Ive had every PES game and ISS before that !) including FIFA and others.

There are so many things you can do which you cant in other games.

Yes it does have a few flaes but the more you play the more you get used to them.

My one criticism, but its the same in every sports game Ive played, is that a good player is not automatically faster or stronger in a tackle than a lesser player. There is no way that John Terry is faster than Seb Larrson and Micheal Owen would not win many 50/50s or headers against Roger Johnson.

Oh yes I forgot because I dont use it because it is so bad but the online version is terrible. Even if it had no lag there are so few options - no online leagues with your friends etc

This game is very close to being brilliant, once the braindamaged refs and lame online play are addressed.

Yes, but what if I really like the game? I mean, yes, obviously you aren't happy with it and think it sucks harder than Paris Hilton in a hotel room - BUT, I like it. The gameplay, the immersive and intensive master league. The refs are awful, this is true. But the are awful in to both teams (I have had 2 pens in 5 seasons for me and 1 against  - which maybe proves your point also.

But I like it. And i don't believe I'm deluded or naive (in fact I could level the same charge at you, that is how meaningless and purely subjective it is).

So I ask again, why should I stop buying something I like just because some complete stranger spits the dummy out of his pram because he DIDN'T like it?

As much as I've squared up to its flaws this year, now I've given it enough time and as previously mentioned, being launched on the same day as FM3 did it no favours, I've grown to like it a lot. Easily the best since PES6 on PS2.

It's annoying. The computer gives fouls that aren't. The keepers spill too often. The AI is set to idiotic by default. Yet despite all that, I've been scoring the sort of breathtaking team goals that only PES will provide you with.

The cross-pitch pass, controlled and passed onto the attacking midfielder, who passes it to my striker and then he scores it from a wonderfully tight angle and it barely crosses the line.

The cross from a throw-in that meets the same striker's boot. Volleyed right in front of the helpless keeper.

Pro Evo still gets the joy of football right and like the modern game, you can either enjoy it for what it is or moan about the myriad ills. I've chosen the former.

I completely agree with all that you said. PES4 was undoubtly the best pes ever made in my humble opinion. The gameplay was incredibly smooth, the usage of tactics and strategies really paid off and worked really well, especially counterattacking. Since that game Konami's goal was to give the player a hard experience and a difficult game to score and win. As I recall, in PES4 the player and COM really played to win the game, and when playing on Top Player, every game was somewhat challenging and finished sometimes with some good results, like 3-2, or 5-3, or something. Nowadays, it becomes really frustating, at least to me, to give a certain team any kind of strategy to employ ingame. Even with the assisted settings. Also, when playing an exhibition match or a final cup, COM will always play defensively, even when it's losing. In realistic terms, when losing, COM would have to give it's best shot, going up in the field, attack and become more prone to mistakes, giving a player the chance to counterattack, for instance. But Konami really screwed up this, either because our players won't find an open line, or because they simply don't run to be wide open, or simply because passing is extremely bad and prone to error. In the latest editions of PES, Konami really tried to give the player a hard time scoring goals and playing football, thus making the game more challenging, but at a cost of gameplay experience, in my oppinion. I could stay a whole afternoon playing PES4, but since PES5 and above, after 4 games I get really fed up, especially in the latest PES2010. What they have been calling realistic AI, I call extremely cheating AI, and now the referees too.

Verdict: PES10 was probably the only PES that really made me shout like crazy in front of my computer. Annoying and prone to mistakes. What the hell were they thinking when they changed the tactics menu? Can't play counterattacking, COM pratically always counterattacks (what is logical, as they can always run faster than our players, even with ball posession). A whole new level of COM cheating, now we are playing against 14. Can't use the slide tackle button, because even if it was a clean tackle you will most likely receive a yellow/red card (actually, it becomes quite frustrating seeing that you made 3 fouls and have at the end of the game 2 yellow cards and one red card). Corners and crossing are pathetic, not to mention the through passes. Miss PES4.

I have just PES another chance, due to the quality of the improved Master League; but it's just undeniably shocking. It's on the verge of becoming a football manager game, because you have to little influence over what happens in a game.

I think I rated PES2010 at 3/10 on metacritic. Broken animation and collision system, broken AI, broken refs, broken gameplay etc. It's a coaster for me too. Absolute crap.
