Sminky it's not something young people say in general, it's actually very specific to me and Jonno and we've introduced it here. You see when we call someone a '[Insert product/franchise/thing] fag' it can't possibly have gay connotations; its just our way of saying you like something a lot. Jonno has explained this better than I ever could. I think Hunter must realize this, he can't possibly be offended by it.

I was of course being deliberately 'ageist' in my response but It is just another Americanism.

I find it quite creatively charming. I hadn't heard the word used in such a context before - likely because I don't like The Lord of The Rings.

On another note, stemming from Hip Hop culture, we usually refer to fanboys as Stans. Remember the Eminem song/video 'Stan'? I think you get the picture now...

Therefore, I'd also be a Disney Stan.

Actually, fag isn't an americanism. In it's un-abbreviated form of faggot it means something entirely different. I'll let you look it up rather than spoil the fun, just to see which meaning you believe/prefer.

(I am already aware of the answer, being as I am a supercilious git.)

Meatballs. Bikers. Juniors. Sounds like a perverse version of the Generation game.

I was referring to it's origins you excuse for a Dale Winton-a-thon.

I know, I am the rain on your parade

faggot
late 13c., "bundle of twigs bound up," from O.Fr. fagot "bundle of sticks" (13c.), of uncertain origin, probably from It. faggotto, dim. of V.L. *facus, from L. fascis "bundle of wood" (see fasces). Especially used for burning heretics (emblematic of this from 1550s), so that phrase fire and faggot was used to indicate "punishment of a heretic." Heretics who recanted were required to wear an embroidered figure of a faggot on their sleeve, as an emblem and reminder of what they deserved.

I was actually hoping you'd find the 'alternate' version... I'll give you a little longer.

faggot (2)
"male homosexual," 1914, Amer.Eng. slang (shortened form fag is from 1921), probably from earlier contemptuous term for "woman" (1590s), especially an old and unpleasant one, in reference to faggot (1) "bundle of sticks," as something awkward that has to be carried (cf. baggage "worthless woman," 1590s). It may also be reinforced by Yiddish faygele "homosexual," lit. "little bird." It also may have roots in British public school slang fag "a junior who does certain duties for a senior" (1785), with suggestions of "catamite," from fag (v.). This also was used as a verb.

He [the prefect] used to fag me to blow the chapel organ for him. ["Boy's Own Paper," 1889]

Other obsolete senses of faggot were "man hired into military service simply to fill out the ranks at muster" (1700) and "vote manufactured for party purposes" (1817). The oft-heard statement that male homosexuals were called faggots in reference to their being burned at the stake is an etymological urban legend. Burning was sometimes a punishment meted out to homosexuals in Christian Europe (on the suggestion of the Biblical fate of Sodom and Gomorrah), but in England, where parliament had made homosexuality a capital offense in 1533, hanging was the method prescribed. Any use of faggot in connection with public executions had long become an English historical obscurity by the time the word began to be used for "male homosexual" in 20th century American slang, whereas the contemptuous slang word for "woman" (and the other possible sources or influences listed here) was in active use. It was used in this sense in early 20c. by D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce, among others

Feel free to use the term ni**er rig when ever you feel like as well since you have the ability to place words in such a welcoming context.

With severe probabilities of sounding like a douche, what's a ni**er rig? (and I'm not talking about the two hidden letters, I want the actual meaning)

Is it the infamous big "love" tools these guys carries around?
Or can it be a new version of "jødemekk" which can be translated to something like "jew rig". Fixing stuff with tape, or similar suspect materials? Recently used as "cheapskate bowl of hasjish and tobacco, little hasjish and mucho tobacco".

I've never met a pot smoking afro that's cheap with the good stuff, though :)

Liking Lord of the Rings won't have got you using our reasoning hunter, it was a private thing and we're welcoming you into the inner sanctum here by explaining it so you should feel privileged, but don't get too comfortable, the rape will begin soon.

So I watched this video, get to the end and see related videos and came (pun could be intended) across this:

:datass:

Onto the term "faggot". I've never called someone a faggot or fag as an insult to homosexuality. I don't even think it holds that relevance anymore. South Park already explained this!

Joel - I also clicked on that video when jonno's ended. We need help.

Sab - the term refers to fixing something with a patchwork, artifical fix instead of really repairing. Like using duct tape to fix something that requires bolts. or Like konami having all the shots go to the keeper instead of the keepers really becoming more skilled. Sometimes the term jerry rig is used.

...some long copy and paste stuff...

What I was actually hoping you'd dig up was the unfounded rumour that refers to the burning of witches. When the town ran out of 'faggots' (as in the bundles of twigs used for burning), they then started throwing the homosexuals of the village on the fire to keep it going...

So, by virtue of homosexuals being adequate kindling does that mean if you rub two together (fnar fnar) you'll make fire?

Yes. Bizarrely I am asking that.

What ever happened to sticks and stones?

Seriously lads, get a grip of yourselves, people dont directly call people gay on here and if they do so what, if they are gay then the person is right to call them gay and if they are not then the person shouldnt be bothered.....Im not anti gay, everyone chooses there own lives and if they are gay then so be it, what I dont like is the in your face gay who makes a scene wherever he goes then gets offended when asked to tone it down.
Also what doesnt help the gay cause is the tv where gay men use gay terms to talk about each other and just because they are gay they feel its ok to use them terms but a straight person cannot use that term.

I don't think you get it. It's the abuse towards people just because they are gay and nothing else which is the problem. People being picked on, and singled out, because of thier sexual preference and being aggressively slagged over it which is the problem.

People merely calling someone gay, who is, is okay. I don't see why you would, or what the point of that is though. It's when there is hate in the post that it becomes a problem.
