Problem defending lobbed through balls

I'll try man-marking with better defenders in the new patch and see if I have any problems.

one reason i never do man marking in this game is that the defender actually follows the attacker a little to close for my liking. Which always makes him out of position when the forward drops back and I have a huge hole in my defence.
I've tried to use supercancel, but it doesnt seem to work. To counter this problem basically i just spam clear whenever I see a lobbed through ball. It doesn't really fit my playing style as I usually just pass it out of my defence, but its better than conceding a goal thanks to konami

This is a problem. At times when you should be easily intercepting and cutting out the balls your defender just goes AWOL... Sometimes madly tapping square (on ps3) helps as it will lock the defender on to the ball. It's rather annoying to have to do this as u should just be able to intercept the ball. But there are times when nothing will help...

And most people you play online know this, and abuse it to no end...

Same goes with the auto-passing, the stupid auto-crossing system, and "Special controls" button, that apparently does nothing but alter reality and physics.

Tossers taking advantage of a broken system and then saying, "PES is marvelous! The passing is spot on!"

I bet the most advanced tossers could even play this game blindfolded.

To be successful in PES, you only need to know the scripted gimmicks....

super cancel seems to be the only fix. then pray you judge the flight correctly which IMO is sometimes impossible from that camera angle, it will look like you're in the path of the ball but in replay move the camera and ur a meter away or whatever

I have no trouble defending against those lobbed passes unless they're angled wide on the flanks. In the middle, I win 98% of them. At the flanks it's more or less 50/50, but the cross that follows is usually won.

I don't use supercancel most of the time, I just don't play with assisted cursor change.

I use manual, semi-assisted cursor. Plenty of times when I'm standing, waiting for the ball, either the game makes ME MOVE (without me touching anything), or a cursor change occurs and the guy moves out of the way on his own.

Or, the ball will be coming right to my player, and as the ball arrives, he turns around and squats and the ball goes rolling right by.

It's silly animations like this to try and hide the fact that the game is on rails even on manual. i.e. I play a ball to my LM and he stops dead and my CF comes running 40 yards to try and receive the pass. And change cursor curiously doesn't work until somebody touches the ball.

Maybe I do supercancel without thinking about it then, it's a pretty much automated action by now... Bottom line is that I hardly ever concede goals at all, and especially not in open play and lofted through balls.

Corners are my bane though, especially online. I think I concede 95% of goals against on them... Some guy thrashed me 5-3 and scored 4 goals from corners, was my first loss for a while, and first ever to concede more than two goals. Spurs defense could not beat Pique in the air!

Just spam clear of the thoorugh ball and go deeper then (for the ps3), press r2 and square to track and tackle. That's the only solution if trapping doesn't work

I understand that. In theory that's what's supposed to happen....

In actuality, nothing of the sort. I can't change players until konami allows me to on chipped through passes. Usually I'm trying for about 5 seconds to switch players and konami won't allow it until the attacker receives the ball (and konami has moved all of my defenders out of the way). It's a lot like the crossing glitch.

Other times they will switch my player without me pressing anything.

Broken system.....

Which is why I've mostly been playing BAL mode since PES6.
Removing manual cursor change has made this issue worse.

Have you switched off auto tackling, shooting etc in your profile settings? I've done this and there is a noticable difference. I feel more in control of the game and players.

I always set auto-tackling to hard as it is quite helpful this year unlike last year

Just realised that this doesn't even work - sometimes I've hit clear or pass and I get the little powerbar at the bottom which would suggest that the defender's locked on, but he then completely leaves it.

This needs to be fixed.

Abu what do you mean by go behind and hold r2? Do you mean to say that r2 tracking works on lobbed balls or through balls? I thought it only followed the player when they're on the ball...

I just wish they had 11v11 online like FIFA, because I would just do that instead. But the fact that konami frequently overrides the player cursor as well, maybe not.

Yes all that stuff is switched off except for clearances (since konami frequently changes my player and I have to pray that someone will do something...I'll take the clearances off and see if it helps.

I was going to say it doesn't work for me earlier, but didn't want to seem like I was trolling when you offered genuine help. Thanks anyway.

Additionally, I think the fix will probably be something stupid like you have to hold 'special controls' or 'super cancel' (even though trying these things doesn't work for me as it's all so random). This and the idiotic random cursor changing (even on semi) are further supporting my claim that the entire game is still on rails and auto-passing affects the other teams defense.

It's pointless because there is no consistency in defending.
