EA Stop Selling At GAME/Gamestation

The bigger supermarket plan is also to put HMV and GAME out of business as they will pick up the residual sales from the likes of those, again along the lines of being able to offer other products at the same time.

Being a tad specific there Don. The supermarkets aim is to put everyone out of business.

Since a big Tesco and Asda were built up near me a few short years ago, the local town centre which used to be a nice place to go, is now predominately boarded up. It's pretty sad that so many local companies just cannot survive with that kind of competition.

I was speaking to the manager of my local GAME whilst picking up FNV: Ultimate Edition just after he'd been informed. His version of events was that EA were demanding too much per unit from GAME for them to make a profit on due to Supermarkets now dominating the physical marketplace for video gaming. Apparently when GAME took on GAMESTATION they took on a shit load of debt and its now badly affecting GAME thanks to the change in shopping habits. His final statement before I left the store was that he expected to applying for a new job within a year as he couldn't see the store being open beyond that.

Where I live we have a GAME, GAMESTATION, BlockBuster Video and about 8 supermarkets. BlockBuster are more competitive on gaming than the GAME/GAMESTATION store. Pretty much everyone who has reward cards, vouchers or credit notes is wondering whether they'll be able to get rid of them now, most new games are overpriced and generally they only stock pre-owned games.

Not only are their prices exorbitant but their trade in prices frankly pathetic, Tesco, Blockbuster and CEX wipe the floor with them. Its a wonder they are still open when I rarely see a soul in their stores.

^Blockbuster video???? They got ran out of town in the U.S. Very disappointing because you can't rent a video in town anymore from anyone but a machine that holds 20 DVDs and no games.

I have complained about it before - Blockbuster killed mom&pop video rental stores, then Netflix killed Blockbuster and the physical movie rental store building model.

quick question - when you guys refer to supermarkets, does that describe an all in one store? Supermarkets in the U.S. somehow transitioned to mean grocery store. Now WalMarts are the closest thing we have to real supermarkets that sell food, produce, clothes, games, electronics, etc. I was just curious if regular grocery stores are video game sellers in the UK.

"Supermarkets" - ASDA is one and owned by WalMart - have become all-in-one stores over the years. Regular grocery stores are independents run in local areas rather than town centres but supermarkets are regularly opening up in local areas because they are making such big profits that they can afford to do so in order to take further control of the market. Their original focus is food but they do everything else as well.

Their original focus is food but they do everything else as well.

Including undercutting GAME and the like. Remember the Sainsburys COD MW2 promotion? They sold the game for £26.00. A loss of around £10.00 per unit to the store knowing that it would bring punters in who'd think "well may as well do my shopping now I'm here". It worked so well Asda tried something similar with Red Dead Redemption ... only to be stone walled by Rockstar due to some bizarre economics. For each unit Asda planned to sell under RRP Rockstar would have to refund independent stockists the difference.

That is the reality facing the game houses, if Supermarkets are prepared to buy and sell at a loss ... I say loss its infinitesimal to a company like Tesco who equate for 1 pound of every £8 spent in retail in the UK, or £1,117 per second ... then why sell to independents or lesser grossing chains. It's a law of diminishing returns.

To be fair to Tesco, they're the only place I can get tins of John West Tuna and Mayonnaise with Sweetcorn. £1 per tin - excellent.

Only got 20 in the cupboard downstairs, need to swing by Tesco tomorrow and boost my reserves.

The local Game is run by cunts so I'm happy to be hearing this, might pop in to laugh tomorrow.

Also the Tesco do really good deals, remember getting FIFA10 for £25 on release. They also sometimes do deals where you get the game plus 1200 MSP for an extra £5.

And therein lies a tale. My local Tesco has a very limited stock despite the size of the store and is never able to compete with the goliath that is Asda. Asda tends to have the better prices on new releases and a pretty good pre-owned section too.

That said, competition isn't exactly fierce in the back of beyond...

Don't really buy games anymore but when I have they've been part of the trade in deals, as you can't do them online I'd be sad to see them go.

Just a heads up GAME/Gamestation are having massive clear outs, low prices on a crap load of pre-owned games and consoles. New software is apparently being reduced tomorrow. Sign of the end of days for the high street game specalist.

Was in Birmingham branches, Pre-owned console prices:

DS £30
Wii £45
PSP £50
xbox 360 20/40gb (or whatever they are) £69.99
PS3 from £99.99

Might pick up a 360 tomorrow.

Intresting, also read a rumour that the next Xbox will have no disc drive and will just be all downloads. Thus destroying game shops.

Of course it's just a rumour, probably won't be on the next xbox but the one after that.

I've heard the 'fire sale' is to keep the company going for a week or two longer but managers reportedly had a warning today to expect administration in weeks rather than months.
