I do not think much of it. I tried it once in 2008 and it felt like a completely different team as the player's abilities were set to default values, and they had increased vastly over the years.

This is similar to the "catch up" setting in racing games, where the cars furthest behind all start to run on kryptonite. At least in most racing games, the players can choose to switch it off. In PES, it is sold as a part of realistic football simulation. Cheers
