Adjusting Team Styles (yes, in 2011 too)

I have found that the default team styles are just awful. Everything is too centralized in the middle of the pitch, and in defense it simply gets too crowded in a small area around the ball. Feels a bit like kindergarten football, where everyone focus purely on the ball.

My first attempt to rectify this was fairly successful, but it could probably be better. Last year we had global team style editor, this year I have done it manually and changes takes a long while.

What I did is quite simple, by forcing the teams to attack wider, the defending teams defense must spread a bit more out which creates space in the middle of the pitch. Adding a distinct increase in compactness further increased the effect. I have tested this on Professional and Top Player level, it definitely works best with Top Player but Professional is very much enjoyable too.

While I was doing the Team Style editing, I also popped into the set pieces section and added 2-3 defenders to join the attack on set pieces. This hugely improves the deadliness of free kicks and corners, and weaker teams in England seem to benefit from this with their big bad central defenders.

What I did to all teams:
Attacking style -4 (wider)
Pressure -3 (less pressure)
Compactness *see note below (Higher number equals wider spread of defense)

* The really "bad" teams in this game already have very high compactness, most of these I left unchanged at 16+. Those "bad" teams that had a lower compacness got it boosted to 15, unless I knew the style of the club to be really "moshy" or crowded in their own penalty area in real life. I then gave those teams 14. The "normal" teams all got 14, which is the lowest possible wide option. The really good teams, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter (and so on, you decide really) get 12-13 Compactness, which make them harder to penetrate while still avoiding the mosh pit around the penalty area every time the ball is near the penalty box.

I look forward to a release of global editor for team styles, I will do much more testing then, but doing it manually only takes about an hour to do manually and is well worth it in my opinion. These changes makes the game much more fun, and BAL especially benefit from this.

Will you post the settings you changed for the teams? I would like to make the AI play more realistic if that's possible. The issues i have is that they counter too much even teams with possesion of the ball tactics. The AI also seldom plays any longer balls i wish there were a way to change that.

Teams in England play a very fast game with lots of counter attacking. Does anyone think adding Quick Counter the to strategy list (the ones used be the triangle, x, square and circle buttons) not the play style list in management edit, would make these teams play a quicker counter attacking game?

Im just wondering if the triangle, x, square and circle buttons only work for us players and not the AI?!

Did you actually read the first post?

I have tested these settings out on Benfica(all players stats updated from PES Stats Database) both Benfica and Porto are computer and Porto(also stats updated) are leading 2-0 with the default settings and Benfica cant even get near the box

Yes ofcourse, because if Porto is gangbanging their own area that's exactly what's going to happen. The way you test these settings are quite simple, play a game with Benfica vs. Porto where all players are on green form with default strategies. Then adjust BOTH teams strategies and play another game. I bet the last game is much more entertaining in terms of teamwork and passing. Not so much running into one another, losing the ball back and forth without accomlishing anything.

The lack of width in attack from most teams in this game and their incredibly low Compactness (the lower, the tighter) causes too many players to be ball focused at the same time, hence my "mosh pit" comparison. My adjustments adress that issue only, I was not claiming it was a wonder cure for the AI brain.

I have not really had much of a problem with the whole "mosh pit" thing to be exact

your suggestions seems to work. I also felt before that the AI attacked to much through the center of the pitch seems the play is a bit wider in general with these settings.

I think the timeline style of play for the AI during different periods in matches is important. Do you have any suggestions regarding changing these. For instance which PL team play Counter attack and which play Long balls or possesion game etc. I'm not that familiar with how the teams play. Konami have messed up several of these settings for instance La liga teams that play more of a possesion game has gotten Long ball as tactics.

Thank you, I will continue to refine these settings once a global editor is available.
In addition to Team Style, I suspect adding 5 Teamwork on a global basis will make AI players less stupid on the ball, which will enhance the gameplay and difficulty further in a "good way".

I have not yet looked much into this, but I have noticed that the Long Ball setting is used by teams I personally don't think play Long Ball. But the Long Ball setting in the game is nothing like old school Wimbledon either, so I have left these settings alone for now. I also noticed that Offensive Possession football is very hard for the AI teams, Barcelona really struggle with it for example, but I suspect this too will be fixed by the +5 global Teamwork boost. I find quick counter the most usable strategy when I control the whole team, even if i actually play possession football. This is because with quick counter, the attacking players are much faster to move towards the opponent box, and if I don't find a good opening straight away I start passing the ball back and forth on the opponents half. If the possession strategy is used, I more often lose the ball in the middle of the pitch because my players don't move to good positions fast enough.

So before we change these strategy settings, it would be nice to know exactly how they work, and how the AI react to them.

bluechampion has his own blog going on about the subject, head on over to get tips and guidance on how to make PES2011 better. I think most of them make a lot of sense over there, and personally recommend this site.

I am also going to post my future discoveries on the subject there.

EDIT: site is temporary unavailable on the time of posting this link, it worked fine yesterday so I hope things work out. Otherwise I will continue using this thread. Stay tuned.

Global Editor???? I'm guessing this is a program to enable editing large amounts of data in one go rather than one team at a time. And I'm also guessing its for the PC version :-(

I'm on ps3 but will try the team styles see if it works!

You can post the style of Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho? Thanks!

I don't do team specific styles, I only do general changes. Bluechampion does the team specific styles though, try asking him instead.

I think there already is one made for RM under Special One at justpes already.
