Thanks observer! Post them asap! Have you tested any formations in WE8:LE? Maybe 3 at the back would work better on it with the defensive AI being smarter?

Actually, my above post was related more to WE8 rather than PS4. I tried PS4 couple of times, but WE8 is my speciality here.
I am not saying 3 at the back is bad at all in WE8. I am saynig that it is more risky, and if your opponent is really skillful, he is gonna give you a hard time. I played a lot with some good players having 3 at the back, and they were pretty solid at the defense especially with good zone press applied. But tell you what, I feel I can score at any time when I play against them, and eventually I do. Of course they get dangerous at the front with one extra player participating in the midfeild or in the attack. With my solid 4 at the back formation, I play my game slowly. Try to utilize spaces in his defense. Player Mentality (one of the player competencies) is a big factor in this game. If one of his defense is having a poor mentality or having a bad day (a white arrow down for example) he looses position easily. One mistake like this, I take a good advantage of it and I net the ball easily. That is the danger of 3 at the back.

The more I think about it now, I say use a 3 at the back formation but not as your default. switch back and forth to it. There are a dozen of good formations with 3 at the back. You can switch to it during the game ONLY when you feel you are on the top of your game or maybe your opponent is not good enough that day.

when you have three at the back, always have your defense system as "Sweeper", which is the one usually in the middle two steps behind the other two. Of course, a good sweeper (Tall, strong, mentality, stamina and defendinjg skills) is a must. Be ware, the sweeper keeps himself the last player in the feild, so he should be NEVER out of play. He is cool, guards the area, and keeps his eyes on the ball. When he is involved, he is soo focused to get the ball or end the attack (even with a foul). I always prefered Rickard in this position (Tall, fast, strong), and my old time favorite is Baresi from classis italy.

Using three at the back, always make their defense to "High". Important point here is to set "Back line" to "C". This makes them rarely participate in the attack. They just wait at the back, and don't participate in offense and when you win corners (to avoid counter attacks). This is extremely important. Actually more important than giving awareness arrows to the back.

The other 2 DF should be fast and strong, to be able to cover the huge area. Stam, Nesta and Krol are my favorite here. Another key here is to have a brilliant DMF (with "High" defense) when you have 3 at the back, preferably 2 DMFs. Davids, again Rickard, Beackuenbaur (sp?), Krol, veira, Gerrard and Guilt are my favorite.

The general strategy when you defend with the 3 at the back is to try to slow down the offense till you have the rest of your players back. Avoid confrontation if you are not sure about winning the ball, cause you can't afford to have one of them out of play. The three keeps their eyes on the ball, fence the penality area, waitnig for support from the rest of the team (hopefully DMFs & CMF). As they slow down the attack, I bring more players to the back (Set team defense to the far left or right). And if I have to confront, first use one of your 2 defenders . Then, when it is more critical, Mr. Sweeper should get the job done. I remember the major challenge for my friends was to pass Rickards or Bsresi, my sweeper ;)

Be smart and choose your battle carefully.

My 2 cents !

What is the worst team strategy settings possible? I want to know which will make my team play bad & concede alot of goals! The reason is because I play against one of my mates who is poor at the game & I want to make it a little more interesting!
i am talking about the backline, zone press, offside trap, counter attack settings etc.

He is decent but just tell me if you know or else don't bother telling me anything else. Dont wanna sound rude but anything else you could tell me is irrelevant to me at this minute!

I have a problem with using manual strategy. Since I first learned about setting up advanced formations and how to swap between them (reading this thread, obviously), my game has changed completely. I started scoring more goals as I was able to put more people up front etc.

Now, during a friendly (off-season) I wanted to adjust my A and B formations just a little as we paused between 1.st and 2.nd half. So I go to my strategy settings, make my littel adjustments and begins the 2nd. half. Just as ref. whistles to begin I think: "might just wanna save these new adjustmenst" so I pause game, select "stock formation" (I think) and continue the game.

But now, instead of showing the triangle, cross, box or circle dependant on what formation or strategy I have selected, I get an "A1"m "L1" or "A3" in yellow?!?!?#¤ Hence I cant' figure out what formation I'm using and I can't seem to make those darn yellow letters and numbers disappear???
I tried the nex friendly, and is was the same: no symbol..

Can anyone help with this!?

Cheers -

i use in manual formations: counter attack left, right and attackers press but i really don't notice the difference, i only notice the difference when i change my whole formation to formation A for example

Having formation changes in-game is pretty useless unless you are advanced at pes skills to make the most out of them. :)

Try 4-2-4 as an attacking but still solid at the back formation. works pretty well. use as second or third formation. :)

Thanks mate! wHAT ABOUT ZONE PRESS & OFFSIDE TRAP?

Its always good if your back line is 'A' to use the offside trap and to use it well. Zone press is ok but can sometimes pull players out of position leaving gaps.

Hello there, Im new to this thread but ive been a diehard pes fan since the days of iss international soccer. Im glad to see people in here who take as much an interest in the tactics and formations in this game as I do. I noticed pro PIMP was wondering about the team strategy and what the letters stood for, im sure this has probably been covered already but here:

Back Line: This is how far up the field your defensive line will push up

C- They will stay deep, depending on other factors ie their defence levels and where the ball is this can be from the edge of their box to about 40 yards out. This is the setting to use against teams with pacey forwards, or counter attack oriented teams.

B- The back line will push up about 10 yards further but unless they have attacking arrows or low defence will not usually make much of an effort to get involved with your teams attacks, ie full backs wont overlap your side midfielders.

A- The defence will push right up to the half way line and sometimes the full backs will go even further to offer attacking options. This makes the defence susceptable to counter attacks and long balls over the top. A team like Man U play like this with Neville and Heinze pushing forward to the wings. Also they have pacey cb's in Ferdinand and Silvestre which makes it hard to break away against them.

Zone Press: This is how much the midfield in particular will close down and harrass the attacking opposition.

C- Will stand off the opposition and leave the closing down mainly to the player. Depending on the defensive levels, will wait until the opposition is so far up the field before doing it automatically.

B- Will press the opposition but not to the extent that it could leave massive gaps between the defence and midfield.

A- Use this when you are trailing a match or if your opposition's midfield seems to have a lot of time and space to pick out passes that are hurting you. Your team will press the opposition even in their own half of the field. But this can leave a lot of space to exploit behind the midfield.

Offside Trap:
Kind of self explainatory. This is how the defence will deal with players who play 'on the last man'.

C- Will drop back goal side to prevent the player having an easy path to goal.
B- Will occasionally try the offside trap if a player wanders behind the d-line.
A- Will push up the field to catch players offside who werent offside before.

Counter Attack:
This is how a team's attacking players position themselves when the opposition have the ball. This Co-incides with zone press as a player may move back to close down the opposition.

C- Attacking players will prioritize defending and back into a position to help the midfield and defence.

B- Will keep within reasonable passing distance to the midfield so its easier to build up passing plays from the back to front.

A- The attacking players will stay as high up the pitch as possible. A couple of good passes from the back after an opposing attack and there will be a lot of room to exploit. This works particularly well with one target man and one pacey forward, ie. inter with Adriano and Martins.

Also, I was wondering about the Formation A and Formation B strategies. How long would you say it takes for a team to re-shuffle itself when the ball is still in play, and indeed if it does change from the default formation before a stoppage occurs.

Thats aimed at JMZ, this guy seems to know his stuff. Anyone though really.
