its easy really if running with R1 and left stick what bI do is use my right thumb to keep the stick held down and use my left hand to double tap the D pad.

OR, you could always just wait until your player has the ball away from his feet in a sprint, quickly let go of the left analogue stick and then press it in the direction your player is still sprinting, then he will kick it further next time.
