Quick question regarding 3Dmark 03. When I run it under 2k I get about 3300 but when I run it under XP I only get 2400. Both systems are identical apart from the OS, (ie drivers/graphics card settings/3dmark settings etc).

Any idea as to why the difference could be so much?

os's are different man, drivers are different
it adds up

So 2K is WAY better than XP? That doesn't make sense.

Here's the full spec:

Barton XP 2500+
Sapphire Radeon 9600pro (Catalyst 3.10 driver)
Direct X 9.0b
512MB PC3200 DDR400 RAM
Gigabyte KT400A mobo

Its not a case of 2k being better than XP, it's to do with alot of things. Such as the architecture, programming, file systems alot of techie stuff which makes OS's different. As for drivers, they require alot of deveopment all the time, and it can take a while getting it right for certain Operating systems. I don't really have a textbook answer, nor i suppose this answers your Q fully, but its the best i got i suppose.

Hold the front page!!!

Win 2000 catalyst 4.1 drivers for my 9500 pro card have completely solved all crashing and 'back to desktop' problems. Highly recommended!!!

Installed the 4.2s now and still get crashing to desktop :(

Tried it with the original on its own (slowdown on replays), 1.10 and 1.3 patches too but no different *cries*

Haven't edited the game at all with these installs, just want the thing to run stable!!

I assume I only need to download the display driver?

I have a Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro. It comes with its own setup utility thing, called redline, so I assume I don't need to download the control panel?

"Locate the WDM Capture drivers and double-click on it. - ONLY download if you have an AIW RADEON or RADEON VIVO family product"
what are AIW and VIVO? I assume i dont have either so don't need it?! Do I have them and what are they :D

I obviously need the display driver though, as that is the main thing.

How can I find out what version of drivers I have already?

If you right click on your desktop, go to display properties i.e. settings, advanced and go to the ATI options tab it will display which Catalyst version under Version information.

Don't worry about AIW and VIVO as its nothing to do with your card.

Its best to download the display driver AND control panel as ati update both. When i update i follow this process.

Add/remove progs - use ati software uninstall utility
then remove the other ati listed items in the add/remove progs
next go to device driver and uninstall both display adapters. (dont restart yet)
then go to windows/inf and delete all atixxxxx files
restart
cancel installs and dont connect to the net
install JUST the display driver and restart
install the control panel and restart (find the c:\ati folder and locate control panel setup)
driver installed :D - might need to setup your gamma balances etc
