When you are trying to protect a 1 goal lead, what is the best defensive formation allowing for superior ball possession in the back-field & mid-field?

BEST DEFENSE when ahead by 1 goal???

I'll try it out. My rival pal uses a 4-1-2-3 against me so I really want to be able to bog him down if I score 1st. I was trying a 4-3-3(AC MILAN: 2 DMF, 1AMF) with marginal success and also was experimenting with the 3-5-2... any thoughts on this?

The strongest defensive formation would probably be 5-4-1.
I'd go with 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-2-1 with the 3 defensive midfielders pushed back.

Thanks Zygalski: 4-3-1-2 Defending

I went with the 4-3-1-2 for defensive formation when trying to hold a lead with the 3 DMF's pushed all the way back and it worked well. Thanks Zygalski.

Hey, should my back 4's line defense best be served on setting B or C in your opinion in such a defensive hold-the-lead situation?

Why not try 3-5-2 thats what i use.
I have stam,thuram maldini as the 3 cb;s
Keane or vieiraor davids as dmf
Zidane as centre midfield
and ronaldo and robben on the wings with ronaldinho in the middle
Up front it has to be rooney and i rotate between ronaldo, sheva and vieri

Gone two seasons in the league unbeaten but bayern beat me 1-0 in the champions league final with no other than ballack scoring a cracker,I was freaked but i had been watching all their results and i was a bit warry of them which is why i think i lost.
Showed them too much respect

Doesn't sound very defensive to me!! What difficulty level do you play on?

Hi
The most defensive formation I play is 5-3-2 with 5 players back (duh), 1 DMF close to the defenders, 1 CMF and 1 AMF on the central circle (one on the left and one on the right) and 2 CF (or 1 CF and 1 SS) in front.
It's a very defensive formation that's good for counter attack but the drawback is that it gives away midfield to your oponent.

Other one I use is 4-5-1, with 1 DMF, 2 CMF, 1 AMF (droped to one of the sides) and 1 SMF. At front one lonely CF.
You'll control the midfield with this formation, but you need a mobile CF in front and a good AMF.
I usually play this formation with barça.

Hope this helps!

3-5-2 works well for me. Play sweeper system, all 3 defenders on high defense with attack arrows towards ya keeper.

Have 2 DMF's one with high defense with attack arrow towards your defenders and the other with normal defense and no attack arrows. He will then be able to join your attack when you break.

Then set your 2 SMF's towards your defensive line and make em wing backs with high defense and no attack arrows. Youll find they will still go forward but will be positioned better for defending. (they will get tired though)

Another little tip i have learnt, which works well for me is to set your goalie on normal defense with an attack arrow going forward. Then with good use of ya triangle button your goalie will act as a makesift sweeper and will also be quicker out to one on one situations. :)

I play 6*, 3 CB's, DMF, 2 SMF's, 2 OMF's, 2 CF's. I ALWAYS attack, if you sit back, you're giving teh oppostition too many opportunities to score. If you're 1 goal ahead, you'll see that the AI really pushes forward more, meaning you can score 2-3 more goals on teh counter attack ;).
